Browsing through the Lithuanian wikipedia, I stumbled upon an article on Belarus.
So, in Lithuanian its name is Baltarusija. Which, I guess, has more to deal with Baltics than with 'white'. But the country is landlocked. And balta means breach in Latvian (and I guess, it would mean pretty much the same in LT).
Perhaps, they call the land that way because they used it as a foothold in wars against Moscovia. Mind you there used to be Greater Lithuania and Greater Poland, both used to have parts of each other's territory and that of Belorussia, too...
