For a couple years I've been aware of this site called Craigslist. I go there semi-religiously to peruse and sometimes drool over my keyboard in wanting musical equipment that I can't have or afford or sometimes don't even need. Every once in a while what looks like a deal may strike my attention. In the past I've never engaged in conversation with sellers. Today was not the case. I found a guitar that I could quite possibly be in love with for the time being...
(This whole next section will be for gear nuts)
I've wanted a semi-hollow body guitar for quite a while now. I do love my strat, but it has it's limitations in tone. My musical taste has somewhat grown and shifted, and also the music I like to play and compose has altered over the years. Strats are great, but I find that one cannot get a strat to ever sound like something beyond Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton. I do have three humbucker pickups on my strat which help warm up the tone, but still, it has it's limits and I have found them. It sounds kind of nerdy, but I do have a dream guitar. In an ideal world where I would have $4000 to spend, I would own a Gibson ES 330. This is a discontinued model that I believe only sold for around 5 years. Gibson then came out with the ES 335 which they continue to sell. The 330 was then used to model the Epiphone Casino which the Beatles all made popular with their recording of Revolver. The Epiphone Casino would be another guitar that I would consider getting if it weren't for the $2000 price tag. Plus, I don't like buying new equipment. I like ideally vintage or used stuff. I find it lame and suburban to truck down to Guitar Center or Sam Ash or any other Walmart of music stores to buy one's main gear (guitar, amp, keyboard). Those stores are fine for pedals (if that's your thing) or strings or accessories, and probably drums. There aren't too many local shops that have drums that I know of. 8th street music apparently is no more. I don't play drums though. I'd like to learn one day. Anyway...
As fate or chance would have it I responded to an ad today that sounds promising enough for me to transfer money out of my savings account. The price is pretty low, and it's pretty much the exact style of guitar that I've been wanting to get. It is an Epiphone EA 250. It looks just like the Gibson 330 or the Epiphone Casino. I don't think it has the same P90 pickups that helped make those models sound the way they did, but I'm thinking that I could probably install or have someone install P90 pickups if I so desired relatively cheaply. Also, this guitar (EA 250) is a discontinued model. It was made in the 70s from Japanese parts in the US. I've read nothing but good reviews. I'm excited if this deal goes through.
Done.
