On Euro '08, T-Shirts, and Up-coming Films

Jun 08, 2008 14:25

I was rather perplexed and amused to find washing instructions with a sense of humour. I bought a three-pack of t-shirts last week and when I looked at the washing instructions today, I realised that at the bottom of the usual "wash with same colours" and "trumble dry low" the company had decided to print "Or just give it to your Mom". Odd.

I was further surprised last night as to how many Portuguese people with cars live in Reutlingen. I had expected to see (and hear) a lot of Turkish jubilations provided they had won, but the Portuguese celebrations were equally force- and colourful.

I haven't been to the cinema very often lately, mostly because the selection of films offered was particularly great but also because there is only one cinema complex in Reutlingen. Given that the town has more than 100,000 inhabitants, that's rather poor. I put it down to the fact, that there is no university in Reutlingen, only a technical university. Tübingen for instance, a much smaller place, has two big cinemas and two arthouse cinemas like the Cameo in Edinburgh.

The prospect this summer is not as bleak as I first thought, though. People who've had the misfortune to ever go to the cinema with me, will remember that I tend to devided films into the categories "Forget it", "Rent it", "See it". These are the ones I'm waiting for to be released this year:

(In the order they came into my mind)
1. The Dark Knight, the film which will be known for alledgedly killing Heath Ledger. Apart from that, I liked what they did with "Batman Begins" and the trailer looks good.
2. Wall•E, Pixars next adventure of a robot's amorous exploits. Although I fear, the film might go down the road of Cars by the looks of the trailer, I'm hoping that Pixar won't disappoint like that ever again.
3. Hancock, the new Will Smith film. Now, lest anybody thinks I'm a superhero film fan or nuts for Will Smith, I feel compelled to dispelled any such thoughts but the trailer to this film looks so unbelievably awesome, I must see this movie. Drunk superhero who needs a PR makeover.
4. The Mummy - Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Now I particularly love the fact that they decided to move away from Egypt and into Asia. I always wondered why nobody had made a film about those terracotta statues coming to life again. It looks like a really weird amalgamation of Indy Jones, Crouching Tiger - Hidden Dragon, and Beowulf.
5. Quantum of Solace, James Bond's newest mission. Self-explanatory really. Should you need a justification, confer second sentence of "The Dark Knight". :)
6. How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, Simon Pegg's latest. Trailer looks promising although I fear that the whole film will be too American and not British enough, especially the humour. Anybody else find it weird that Simon Pegg has been cast as Scottie in the new Star Trek film?

If you think a film's missing, let me know.
For now, live long and prosper!
