The boy sat down hurriedly on the floor and faced the empty bed. He looked really anxious from Kouyou’s point of view, but he didn’t know that there was actually a bitter smile plastered on the boy’s face.

“There’s nobody here.” Kouyou said as he raised his eyebrow. The boy turned his head to face Kouyou, his index finger placed on his lips-signalling Kouyou to keep quiet.

“I’ll wait outside.” The boy gave a shy smile in return as Kouyou closed the door softly.

Just outside that door, Kouyou prepared himself. He leaned on the door so he can hear whatever the boy will say.

“Happy Birthday, Yuu.” The greeting was serene, but was said with a smile-a smile that can have more than one interpretation.

“Yuu?” Kouyou whispered to himself. What’s going on?

“How you are doing? I already miss you.” There was no response. The boy was all alone in that room.

“I wonder if our parents are there at your grave right now. Of course you’ll know if they are. But I won’t.” Every sentence, the boy’s voice broke. Bit by bit.

“I miss them, Yuu.” The boy’s voice cracked. Surely, the boy was already in the verge of tears.

“But not as much as I miss you.” The sound of sobs came pouring in. A lonely symphony that made Kouyou move away from the door-not wanting to hear anything more of what the boy was going to say. It was none of his business in the first place.

Kouyou just stood there in front of the door, but his focus was on the dirty ground he is standing on. He had no idea why he was feeling so remorseful. Perhaps a memory was suddenly triggered but the boy’s actions and words, because Kouyou was sure he wasn’t feeling remorseful for the boy. It was for someone else, long forgotten.

The door opened with a loud creak, causing Kouyou to snap out of his thoughts. Upon meeting Kouyou’s gaze, the boy smiled. There were no more traces of tears from the boy’s face.

“Were you listening?” Kouyou looked away-ashamed.

“I was. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have-“

“My brother died. Just a year ago.” Kouyou looked at the boy-thinking that maybe the boy sensed whatever he is feeling right now. Kouyou wanted to confront the boy. He wanted to tell him that he didn’t have to talk about it, but it seemed that the boy wanted to, so Kouyou just kept his mouth shut.

“He was a patient here-in this asylum.” Kouyou mouthed the last word. Asylum. Why was he here?

“Our parents loved him so much. I always wondered before if they loved him more than me because of his…” he need not continue. Kouyou already knew that something was wrong with the boy’s brother.

“I never did know the real reason, but that’s the only reason I can think of. But whatever amount of love that my parents lacked towards me, he filled them. But when he died, I just ended up here.” Kouyou waited for a few seconds to pass-for the boy to start talking again. But there was only silence. Kouyou took his chance.

“Your brother’s name is Yuu…” Kouyou didn’t really know how to put his question in to words, probably because of the things he just heard, but he was lucky that the boy understood what he meant.

“That probably is the reason why I am close to Yuu-because they have the same name. There was somehow a connection for me.” Kouyou just nodded, expecting to hear more about Yuu. Something about Yuu just seemed so familiar.

“I was lucky enough that he understands how I feel. Most of the people here don’t bother about anyone else but themselves. They will do anything and everything to survive.” Kouyou begged in his mind for the boy to continue talking about Yuu. He didn’t notice, but the boy seemed to get the idea that Kouyou was interested in Yuu. So the boy kept talking.

“It’s actually quite interesting how Yuu ended up here.” The boy grinned as he stared at the ceiling, as if recalling the story Yuu must’ve told him.

“His uncle dumped him here. He said that Yuu needed to learn. Of course, I don’t know what that really meant, but one can only think of so much things one can learn here, right?” a grin was plastered on to the boy’s face, but at the same time, his eyebrows were furrowed-an expression anyone who’d be hearing the story would probably look like. But to the boy’s expression, it’s as if it’s only until now that the Yuu’s story made sense to him. Kouyou thought that that was really mature for someone of the boy’s age, but of course he wouldn’t say that out loud. He just wanted to listen-to learn more.

“But the reason why he needed to learn was really… well… You see, his father was some kind of business man. He was really strict to his children, especially to Yuu since he was the youngest. There was one time when they went to this hotel because of some business-related thing. Their father brought his children so they would be trained as early as possible in handling their father’s business. It’s pretty stupid for someone as young as Yuu to be part of something so grown-up, isn’t it?” he said the last sentence in a joking manner.

“Of course, Yuu’s mother thought of that as well. So she convinced Yuu’s father to exclude Yuu in their children’s… training. So Yuu was left alone to explore the hotel. Yuu was not used to having at least that much of freedom, so he really didn’t know to do. So he just went on walking around, fascinated at the beauty of the place. He wasn’t looking where he was going. Guess what happened?” Kouyou was sweating. He knew deep inside-the answer to the question.

“He bumped in to someone.” Kouyou was holding his breath. It’s him. It’s Kouyou. That must be him.

“The boy he bumped in to was with his parents. The boy’s parents did not get angry at Yuu, neither did the boy. In fact, they were smiling at him. When Yuu was telling me this part of the story, he told me he was so envious at that boy that time. He said that the boy seemed to have nice parents.” Kouyou’s heart was beating so fast. He confirmed to himself that the boy in Yuu’s story was him. And now, he gets to know what was inside Yuu’s mind during those times. The feeling was overwhelming.

“Yuu said the boy’s parents asked him if he was okay and if he was lost. And when everything was already okay, the boy’s parents insisted that Yuu and the boy to hang out for a while.” Kouyou wanted to stop listening. The story was already getting to that point. He now remembered everything.

“They decided to play chase.” Kouyou closed his eyes, his breathing becoming heavy. But the boy didn’t seem to notice as he was too busy talking.

“The boy was the one chasing Yuu. Yuu was too busy checking if the boy was already catching up to him. Then…” Kouyou was already clenching his fist.

“…Yuu hit one of the expensive decorations. He didn’t exactly tell me what the decoration was…” It was a vase sitting on a glass table. Kouyou remembered it so well, now.

“Yuu got hurt. His hand was bleeding because the decoration broke and he accidentally touched one of the shattered pieces. Of course, the incident reached Yuu’s parents. He got punished. And eventually, he ended up here. Kind of tragic, isn’t it? Just because of that…” Kouyou wanted to cry right there. He was the reason Yuu was here.

“Yuu told me that during the time he broke the decoration, the boy just ran away. It was really frustrating isn’t it? Yuu said he knew the boy’s name, but he refused to tell me.” Kouyou was so afraid. What if Yuu recognized him?

“Ah, I’m sorry. I really didn’t know how our conversation ended up to Yuu’s story.” Kouyou shaked his head. He actually wanted to thank the boy for telling him.

“Let’s head back now.” The boy got up and started to walk slowly, secretly waiting for Kouyou to follow. Sadly, Kouyou’s legs were to numb to move. Actually, his whole body was numb, but was able to pull himself together and eventually followed the boy.

Their way back was silent. It’s like Kouyou forgot to speak all of a sudden. Once they reached Yuu’s-and now probably also Kouyou’s-room, the boy thanked Kouyou once more for accompanying him. Kouyou thought that the boy asked him to come with his is so that he can talk to someone-to divert his thoughts to his deceased brother. He also thought it was weird that the boy didn’t ask his name.

The moment Kouyou opened the door, he immediately saw Yuu, his eyes looking tired as he stared on to the concrete wall across the room.
