Chapter Seventy Seven
My wife, our son Alexander and I arrive in Boston on the cold and snowy night of December 18th after spending a cold but clear and sunny day in Columbus Ohio at The Ohio State University discussing our son’s educational and baseball future. Addie and Frankie meet us at the airport stating that Theodore is working at the hospital and Uncle Kevin is away at a Police Captain’s conference in New York City tonight. When I ask about my mother and my Aunt Jodi, Addie says they are both not feeling well tonight. Once we arrive home I find my mother and my Aunt Jodi curled up on the couch watching a movie in each others arms as they both seem to have the flu. My mother says instantly “We both have appointments tomorrow with our doctor’s so don’t you all worry your pretty little heads about your aunt and me”. The three of us swarm over my mother and my aunt as we shower them with kisses and hugs. My mother takes our son’s face in her hands as she says to him “You are going to graduate high school in less than six months and go off to college. I wish your other grandparents could see you today my boy…they would be so proud of you Alexander” and then I hear my Aunt Jodi say “They are sis, they have been watching over Alexander all this time, Son, we are so proud of you” as she kisses Alexander’s forehead.
Theodore walks into his home after a grueling thirty six hour shift to the smell of his mami’s chicken noodle soup and his momma’s grilled cheeses filled with either bacon or ham. He quietly walks into the kitchen area as he hears his mami and me talking to each other as he comes up behind me and makes me squeal out loud. Then he grabs a hold of his mami as he kisses both of us hello. After a few minutes of idle chit chatting about our lives, I tell of son to go and call everyone for dinner. With my wife handing out bowls of soup to everyone and me passing around the grilled cheese sandwiches, everyone at the dining room table begin to talk about everything that is going on in each others lives as we all catch up. Over the next couple of hours, the Robbins-Torres family eats multiple bowls of my wife’s delicious homemade soup and my countless grilled cheese sandwiches as we talk about everything under the sun until we all notice that my mother and my aunt are yawning continuously as we all decide to call it a night. As it does not take much convincing on all of our parts, Aunt Jodi decides to stay in our home while Uncle Kevin is away as she and my mother decide to share a bedroom.
My mother and Aunt Jodi sit on the sofa sectional and watch as Calliope and I bring up the Christmas decorations from downstairs as we all are waiting on Addie, Frankie, Theodore and Alexander to arrive home with the Christmas tree. Both women have returned from the doctor’s office as it has been confirmed that they both have the flu. So with their medicine and their fluids sitting on the coffee table in front of them, they begin the Christmas ritual of telling the two of us where to place all the Christmas decorations throughout the house as we all wait for the arrival of the tree. Once the doorways inside and outside, all the shelving units in every room, the front and back porches and finally the fireplace mantles are completely decorated for Christmas we hear the closing of the van doors and people talking as we all look out the windows and see the rest of our family untying and bringing into our home the annual Robbins-Torres Family Christmas Tree.
My wife and I along with our children and their significant others are helping with the cooking of dinner tonight and the setting of the dining room table. I look over into the living room area as I see that our son Alexander is sitting on the sofa with his great aunt resting her head on his left shoulder as she is softly snoring and my mother sitting under our son’s right side as his arm is around her and they are watching the news together as they sip their cocoa. Then my mother switches the channel as I hear her say “Alex, I found this program on PBS a couple of weeks ago about Harvard University. Would you care to watch it with me” as our son kisses his grandmother’s forehead knowing full well that there is nothing more that his grandmother wants more in her life than to have her grandson here with her for the next four to five years as she is silently pushing for him to come to Boston and attend Harvard as he says sweetly to her “There is nothing I would rather do right now that to watch this program with you, grandma”. For the next hour our son and his grandmother watch the PBS program about Harvard University as my Aunt Jodi lay sleeping and softly snoring on our son’s shoulder with his grandmother curled up in his arms as they drink some hot tea I have brought in for them. I sit on the stool next to the island as I just watch my family.
The next morning the house is filled with the hustle and bustle of everyone doing what they are supposed to be doing after finishing a well deserved breakfast. My wife and I along with our mother and Aunt Jodi kiss Alexander, Theodore, Addie and Francesca good bye as they all make their way to the airport to collect Uncle Kevin along with our other children and our adorable five grandchildren. My wife and I rented a town car complete with five car seats for our family because we did not think that our old and crusty van would be reliable enough for everyone. Calliope and Aunt Jodi begins to tackle the upstairs as my mother and I begin downstairs as we all Lysol the house down and get it ready for the rest of our family to arrive. Checking flight plans on the internet I tell my wife, my mother and Aunt Jodi that our children’s flight is arriving on time and Uncle Kevin’s flight is about a half an hour behind them. Within the next two hours our son Theodore texts me that everyone has arrived safe and sound and they are now heading back home. I let everyone know that our family will be arriving soon as we all put the finishing touches on our lunch buffet.
With the adorable sounds of the words “Grandmamma, Grammy and Great Grandma filling the outside air as Arizona, Barbara and I hear our grandchildren as they are running up the yard and into the house. Just as all five grandchildren start to run into the house our daughter Bailey screams from the car “children” and they all stop in their tracks. As each child stumbles into the other as they have all fallen into the new room that we had built just for the purpose of changing out of our outer wear before anyone enters the main part of the house. My wife and I along with Barbara begin to help each child with their winter coats, hats, gloves and boots, all five children are talking about their airplane ride as the three of us women listen intently. Then by the time we relinquish all of our grandchildren outerwear they all race inside the house with Barbara to find the cookie jar as they all know that great grandma has made a new batch of cookies for them. Finally Bailey and Samuel along with Timothy and Elizabeth make their way inside as they too relinquish their outerwear in the outer room as they all four take their luggage and their children’s luggage upstairs to their rooms. Timothy says very loudly from the top of the stairs “Grandma, they only get one cookie each. Please don’t spoil their appetite before they eat their lunch”. My mother-in-law says so sweetly “Don’t worry son, I wouldn’t dream of it”.
After lunch Theodore and Alexander give Uncle Kevin and Aunt Jodi a ride home on the snowmobiles as the rest of us take the grandchildren sled riding before supper. With Bailey and Elizabeth taking this advantage to take a nap along with my mother as we all leave them in the house. Three hours later after doing some sled riding, tobogganing, snowmobiling, having a snowball fight, making a very tall snowman and to end the afternoon with teaching our grandchildren to ice skate on the pond out back, my wife then promises the grandchildren with some hot cocoa and another one of my mother’s homemade cookies before dinner as all of us head back inside just before the sun begins to set. As we are all changing out of our winter wear the children smell hot cocoa in the air and as we all walk through the back door into the kitchen we see that Bailey and Elizabeth are making the cocoa as my mother is placing a plate of cookies on the table. With each person given a cup of cocoa and one cookie, we all begin to warm back up as we listen to the children talk about their adventures in the snow this afternoon. After eating our light snack the grandchildren make their way to the play room until dinner is ready. Each of our children except Alexander come up to my wife and me individually and tells us they need to talk to all of the family today.
With dinner being consumed by all, it is now time for our grandchildren’s bath and getting ready for bed. With my wife and me helping Bailey and Elizabeth with the bathing and reading the grandchildren their bedtime stories, we kiss them goodnight and promise more adventures tomorrow. The four of us women walk downstairs to find that the rest of our family has congregated in the den as everyone has taken a seat and Samuel and Bailey stand before us. With Samuel holding his wife close Bailey begins to say “I just wanted all of you to know something before we tell the children. Samuel and I are going to have another baby. I am about three months pregnant and the baby is due in late June”. Everyone jumps out of their seat to kiss and hug and congratulate the happy couple as we all promise not to say a word the Michelle or Sam Jr. Then Timothy and Elizabeth step up in front of everyone as Timothy begins “Elizabeth and I do not think we can top what is happening with Bailey and Samuel but we just want to update everyone on how well Torres Industries is doing. When I took over a CEO seven years ago, I wanted to take this company that our grandfather built and bring it into the future. With Grandpa Carlos’ blessing before he passed away, I began this venture. I am happy to say that with our grandfather’s approval and some hard work on everyone’s part at Torres Industries, we have been able to expand our workforce as we are opening another plant Jacksonville on April 1, 2044. Even though we have restructured our format to be more family friendly in the workplace as we have established as onsite day care center and after school programs for our working parents with children, we have not lost one employee to layoffs. That is a fact that I am very proud of and take a personal satisfaction”. Then Elizabeth begins to say “When Tim proposed these ideas to me and asked me to contribute my ideas to these family oriented programs, I hit the ground running. The thought of this idea came from the two of you, Arizona and Callie, because of no matter how busy you both were when your children were growing up, you both took the responsibility upon yourselves to make sure that there was always somebody to help take care of your family. Whether it was the hospital day care or hiring a nanny or even when Barbara moved to Seattle. There was always some loving person to take care of them. So, we decided to have a place in our company where parents could place their child in that safe and happy environment and they could see them whenever they have time too. So thank you both for raising all five of your children with such love and respect as I hope to pass this trait onto our children”.
Everyone takes a break as we all say we will meet back here in the family room in fifteen minutes as we all go into the kitchen to get some drinks. Once everyone comes back into the family room Addie and Theodore stand up to talk. With Theodore standing up first he begins to say “I have received a half a dozen letters of intent from different hospitals all over the United States asking for me to join their fellowship program. I have sent my letter of intent back to St. Mary’s in Miami and they have accepted me. As of June 1, 2044, I will be in the fellowship program at St. Mary’s in Miami. So Bailey, Samuel, Elizabeth and Timothy, I hope there is a bedroom at the Torres Mansion that I may use for the next few years during my stay”. Bailey and Elizabeth as well as Timothy and Samuel jump out of their seats as they hug and kiss our son as do the rest of the family as Bailey is the first to say “Yes” to his question about his new living arrangement. Then I say without thinking “What about Matilda”? With everyone stopping what they are doing, our son hangs his head and says “Last week when I receive St. Mary’s approval letter for my fellowship, the first person I wanted to tell was Matty. I took her out to lunch and talked about our future together. I told her about the different letters of intent for all the different hospitals and when she found out that I passed on the Mass Gen’s fellowship she became very angry. She would not understand that I wanted to go to Miami and continue my education in orthopedic surgery. She said that she could not and would not leave her studies here in Boston let alone leave her friends and family. I asked her if we could go somewhere and talk about this decision rationally and she said no. That is when I excused myself to use the restroom. When I returned to the table, her engagement ring and a note was left for me. The note said that she was sorry and she could not do this any longer. I tried to call her several times to talk about this matter but she has not returned any of my phone calls. So when I finish my residency here at the end of April a take my board’s exam in May, then I will head to Miami at the end of May a single man”. We all hear the sadness in Theodore’s voice as I hold on to him with all my might and say “I am so sorry my son”.
Then it is our daughter Addie’s turn as she stands before us and says “Bailey and Samuel congrats on the new addition to the Robbins-Torres family. Tim and Lizzy congrats to you both for keeping the Torres Industries in check and to the new format. Ted glad to here about St. Mary’s but sorry to hear about Matty. And now on to my news because there are two things I need to discuss with all of you today. I, too, received letters of intent for a fellowship program from some well renowned hospitals across the country that Frankie and I have talked about since last week. I have sent my letter of intent to Children’s Hospital of Boston to begin my fellowship in pediatric surgery also on June 1, 2044 after I pass my board’s”. Everyone jumps up again from their seats to congratulate our daughter on her accomplishment but then sits back down when she says she has something else to say. Our daughter walks over to her fiancé as she reaches for Frankie’s hand to lift her off the sofa. Addie takes out of her pocket a black velvet box as she bends her body down on one knee and says “Francesca, you have been the love of my life for as long as I can remember. You have taken a chance on love and moved across this beautiful country of ours twice for me and my dream. Now in front of our family I am asking you to take another chance with me and our dream to ask you to be my wife. I love you with all my heart and I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you. Frankie, will you marry me”? We all watch as Francesca places both of her hands on our daughter’s cheeks as she raises Addie up as she cries and says “Yes my darling, I will marry you” and kisses our daughter tenderly. Then Timothy and Theodore say very loudly “Hell yea” as they both make a beeline downstairs as Timothy says “This calls for a celebration”. A few minutes later both of our sons come back upstairs as Timothy is holding a bottle of champagne and Theodore is holding a non alcoholic bottle of champagne as Theodore says “Let’s drink”.
As our very rambunctious and very energetic grandchildren are running around the house waking everyone up three days before Christmas, our grand daughter Michelle Iphigenia is standing on my side of the bed as she softly strokes my face moving my hair away as she whispers “Grammy, are you awake”? I begin to stir in my bed as I growl at her a little so she moves to the other side of the bed where my wife is sleeping and does the same thing to her face. But unlike me, my wife grabs a hold of our granddaughter and begins tickling her showing her that she is truly awake. As they both jostle the mattress under me, I growl again. Then I hear my wife say “Let’s go baby girl and start some breakfast because the smell of coffee will definitely wake your grumpy Grammy up”. As they both kiss my cheek and make a mad dash for the door, I cover my head with the bed covers and move over to my wife’s side of the bed where I find additional warmth and the smell of my wife on her pillow as I slowly sink back into my slumber. A little while later I hear the door of our bedroom creak as I smell the aroma of a freshly brewed cup of coffee as I hear the clinking of a cup and saucer hit the wood of my nightstand and I begin to move about in my bed. Then I hear a rustling noise as I feel the bed covers lift off my body and feel the warmth of my wife’s body on mine. I do not even have to open my eyes as a moan escapes my mouth and I feel two warm lips on mine and a very soft tongue as it spreads across my lips. With a slight deviation with my lips this very soft tongue enters my mouth as I now hear my wife moaning with pleasure. With all of her nakedness spreading my legs open and I feel her very hot a dripping mound as it grazes over mine and all of my nakedness, my wife’s lips now move from my lips and become attached to my neck as she whispers ever so softly “Good morning, baby”. As I just moan “Hmmm” and then say “It is now” my wife pulls the bed covers over the two of us as she makes her way down between my legs. Arizona just stops short of where I need her tongue the most as she says “Baby, you have to be extra quiet because everyone is awake and will hear you”. I place my hand on the back of my wife’s head and say “Alright baby, but please continue…please” as I close my mouth and try to silence my moaning as I ride out the mind blowing orgasm that my wife gives me. My wife slides up my body as I try to control my breathing as she kisses me and tells me she loves me.
Calliope and I make our way out to the kitchen to see if we can find any breakfast left as we hear the rest of our family making plans for the day. My wife and I are making our plates as Calliope says softly “I am so hungry this morning” as she kisses my neck sweetly and whispers so no one else can hear her “I thought maybe you got enough to eat this morning” as I smile and kiss her lips and whisper back to her “I will never get enough of you”. We both take a seat at the kitchen table as we listen to our family talk about their plans. The debate rages on about how they would like to finish their Christmas shopping without dragging the children from store to store. My mother offers to watch the grandchildren but five is just too many to watch at one time. Before I can even offer our services my wife tells our children that we would love to watch the grandkids and they should all go out and have a good time. I even add that they should all go out to dinner and maybe out for drinks afterwards because for the next their days will be full with Christmas activities. Our children kiss my wife and me and tell us thank you. So Timothy, Elizabeth, Bailey, Samuel, Theodore, Addie and Francesca all make their way to get ready to all go and hang out together for the rest of the day. Alexander stays seated at the table with my wife and I as I say to him “You know you can go with them too, baby boy” as he smiles with his dimples in full view at my wife and I and say “And what leave you two and Grandma with all the fun of my nieces and nephews to enjoy. No way ladies, I am staying right here with all of you. Besides I really do not want my friends to see me hanging out with my older brothers and sisters…After all I do have an image to maintain”, The three of us burst out laughing at what our son just said as my wife says “Oh Alex, you are such a treat to be around.
Grandma Barbara is keeping an eye on Samuel Jr. and Daniel as they are in the bathtub as I am trying to gather up their PJ’s. Momma and mami are bathing the girls as we all are trying to get them ready for bed. All of a sudden I hear my Grandma scream “Alexander” and when I turn around I see Samuel Jr. and Daniel run from the bathroom and out into their bedroom. I come through the door and grab the two of them as I say “Whoa there little guys” as I carry them back into the bathroom. My Grandma hands me two towels and I take them and my nephews back into the bedroom as I wrap them up in the towels. I set them on their beds as I say “Don’t move” as they both sit still. I help my Grandma out of the bathroom as she takes a seat in the bedroom and watches me finish getting the boys ready for bed. My Grandma begins to scold my nephews for running away from her very sweetly as she says “You know boys, it was not very nice of you both to run out of the bathroom still wet without letting me dry you off first. You see, when your grandmamma and her brother Tim did that one time when they were little and your grandmamma and Tim slipped on the floor just like these floors as they both got hurt. Your grandmamma ran so hard that she ran into the corner of her dresser and hurt her head really bad. She cut her head open and had to have stitches. If you look at her head right here, as she points to the left side of her head just behind the hairline, you can see the scar from her stitches”. Samuel asks his great grandmother “What about her brother Tim? Did he get hurt too”? As I finish getting the boys into their pajamas my Grandma says “Yes he did Samuel. He, too, ran to fast and slid into the door knob where he hit his eye. For the next week Tim suffered a black eye as he and his sister never ran out of the bathroom again”.
Just as my Grandma finishes her story my mommas come into the room as my mami says “You boys ready for a story before you both go to sleep”? Samuel Jr. and Daniel climb under the covers as my mommas tuck them in safely as Daniel says “No ma’am, great grandma Barbara told Sammy and me a story already but can I ask grandmamma a question”? Both of my mommas take a seat on the side of the bed that my two nephews are sharing as my momma says “Yes baby boy, you can ask me anything your little heart desires”. My Grandma and I watch as Daniel places both of his little hands on my momma’s face as he tilts her head down a little and pushes back her hair to find what he is searching for as he says to his cousin “Look Sammy, there it is. Do you see it”? As my nephew nods his head yes and they both kiss my mommas and tell them and my Grandma and I all good night and that they love us. The four of us begin to leave the bedroom as Grandma and I begin to walk to my nieces bedroom to tell them goodnight when I hear my momma say to my Grandma “Mama, did you tell Daniel and Samuel about Tim and I running after our bath and about our accident”? My Grandma stating ever so sweetly back to my momma “Yes dear, I did tell them that story because both of your grandsons ran from me when I was trying to towel them off after their bath. I just wanted them to know how dangerous it was to do such a thing”. My momma wraps her arms around my Grandma as she kisses her cheek and says “That is why Daniel looked at my scar isn’t it”? Grandma Barbara says with the biggest smile I have ever seen her wear on her face and says “Yes, my baby girl. Don’t want my great grandchildren to make the same mistake”.
Grandma Barbara gives my mommas and me a kiss goodnight as she says “I am going off to bed now because I am looking forward to tomorrow” as she kisses me again and I say to her “I am looking forward to tomorrow too Grandma and I am so glad you are coming with us” as she says “Me too baby boy…me too”. I walk my Grandma to her room and tell her to get a good night’s sleep and I will see her in the morning. Then I walk back into the family room and ask my mommas “Who’s up for a little popcorn and a movie” as both my mommas raise their hands and say together “Me…Me”. I tell them to choose a movie but it cannot be a Disney flick because I have seen every one of them way too many times and I will pop some popcorn. I come back into the family room with two bowls of popcorn, some fruit and three drinks and set everything down on the coffee table as the movie is about to start. Mami has picked the movie tonight as she has chosen an action adventure with a little bit of full on horror show as she knows that this is the kind of movie we both like but momma does not because she does not like scary movies. Mami also knows that when we watch these types of movies that momma will snuggle up to her when the scary parts come on as this is why she chooses these types of movies. So the three of us settle in as my mommas are laying in each others arms and I am spread out on the chaise lounge. For the first hour or so of the movie I listen to the pleasant banter between my mommas as momma is snuggling further into my mami’s arms during the scary sequences as she expresses her disapproval. Then I get so caught up in the movie as I do not even hear both of my mommas as they snore almost simultaneously as the credits for the movie begin to roll on the screen and I remove myself off the sofa to wake them both up.
Telling my mommas goodnight as they make their way to their bedroom and I will see them in the morning, I grab my IPad and begin to talk to my girlfriend back in Seattle. Katie tells me about her and Jack’s travels this holiday season as she says she liked The University of Arizona and the University of Texas and that Jack likes USC and Stanford. I tell her that I really liked OSU but some things were restricted like parking for one. I tell her that my mommas and my Grandma Barbara are accompanying me to Harvard tomorrow as she tells me good luck. I tell her about Theodore and Matilda breaking up, Addie proposing to Frankie and about Bailey being pregnant again. I talk with Katie for a few hours until I hear the rest of my family come home. I tell Katie I love her and will talk to her tomorrow as we say goodnight. My two brothers and my two sisters and their significant others all come through the back door and into the kitchen as I greet them. I give them all a full report on the children and wish them a good night. As they all hug and kiss me goodnight, Bailey says “Make sure you wake us all up if we are not awake because we all want to see you off tomorrow. You have a big day tomorrow Alexander and we all want to wish you the best. We love you, y’know”, as I watch them all walk to their respective rooms and I say “Yea, I know”. Just as I am about to walk into my bedroom, my momma comes out of her bedroom to pour herself a glass of water as she tells me goodnight and I do the same as she says “You had a busy day today, baby boy” as I say back to her “And a busier one tomorrow, momma. Kiss mami for me and I’ll see you both in the morning. I love you” as retreat to my room.
