I have been watching American Idol for the first time this year (grad school kept me from it in the past!) It is alternately horrid and great, funny and well... horrid. I have to say I loved Gina's performance of the Pretenders song last night--but then again, I do love me some Pretenders, Ohio girl that I am. I like Gina's sassy, rocker-chick personality, and I would wear her outfits if I were thinner and braver. I am getting bored by Lakisha and Melinda, whom I initially liked very much--they are the same every week. I could see them singing at like the Baptist Church Gospel Hour. They are awesome singers but sort of one dimensional--they ONLY sing R&B diva-ish stuff. I do like Jordin, I think she is hitting her stride--but WTF was she wearing last night--a picnic tablecloth? Hayley---she is boring, she can go home now.
As for the guys--sheeeee-it. Sanjaya and the faux-hawk--OMG! Is he just *trying* to be weird? He looked like a fuzzy rooster. Someone please tell him he has overstayed his welcome. I cant stand Justin Timberlake Junior (Chris Richardson) either--I loved Gwen Stefani's comment on his "vocal olympics". Yes, precisely what I don't like about his singing. I thought Phil did a good job with the Police, and he rocked out last week on the British Invasion (which BTW, was not all that British Invasion, with THREE songs by Shirley Bassey, who was never part of it). Phil seems to be getting better every week. I want Chris Sligh to do well, because he is cool, but meh... his vocals arent doing it for me. But he is a McCartney fan, so hey Chris, how about a Macca song? Blake--I liked the song choice (love the Cure) but he was just lukewarm for me. I liked him better last week when he beat-boxed to "Time of the Season".
What is with the "themes" being so uh.... NOT the theme? Wasnt last night "songs that inspired Gwen Stefani?" Did she inspire herself--two of them sang her songs (and one, not well). And two Donna Summer songs--is Gwen a closet disco diva? And last week--how could we have a British Invasion Week with no Beatles? No Dave Clark Five or the Who or the Animals? Or Peter & Gordon? "Tobacco Road" and "Diamonds Are Forever" are on nobody's "Greatest Hits of the British Invasion" records. Hmmmm.
