My rabbit Sunshine died at home last night sometime between 3 AM and 7:45 AM. She was an outsized presence in our life since we got her in April 2018. Her estimated age then was 2 but since someone dropped her off overnight outside the Humane Society's spay/neuter clinic, we will never know her true age. Our baby mice are now in their adolescence. Except, sadly, for the albino with the missing foot, who has died. We have no idea what was wrong with him. I just found him lying half in and half out of the tube that leads to the tower, as though he had just been walking along and then fell over. Our elderly mouse, Pansy, died yesterday. We had to euthanize her. She had gotten gradually shakier and more confused in her old age, but still got around OK and happily took treats from our fingers. Yesterday, the mouse pups opened their eyes. They were right on time: pups usually open their eyes around day 14, and that's what yesterday was. They are no longer confined to the nest, but scurry all around the cage. This means they can chase their poor mom down and try to latch on to her and get a drink even if she has other plans. When Lucky got home, we went in the office (where the mice live) and saw that Lizzie was off her nest getting a drink. She begged for treats, which were happily provided, and did not seem concerned by our looking in on her. (Leslie, on the other hand, fled as usual.) Lucky got a good look at the nest and said that he believes there are ten pups.
