Carbon

Our little trip last weekend was about 2000 km. We put about 131 litres of petrol, worth about 170 euros, into our little Starlet to get there and back. This is 6.3 litres/100 km, and 8.2 cents/km.

170 litres of petrol contains 86.5 kg carbon. Half of this is a reasonable chunk of my 1 tonne of carbon per human per year allowance. Assuming complete combustion, this produces 317 kg CO_2. What is the cost of this carbon?

This is about 1 or 2 percent of our fuel bill. This would seem like a good deal, if I knew something useful was happening with my money. It could well me that my "offsetting" would be any more than paying guilt-money to appease my conscience. I don't know.
