“I’m really sorry!”

The little boy looked up a little frightened at the king. To Baigan’s chagrin the old man didn’t even frown. Worse, he was smiling.

“It’s okay, Cecil. I can easily buy a new one.”

“It cost quite a bit of gil, though. That vase was imported from Troia,” Baigan reminded him.

The king looked up at him, clearly he had forgotten he was there too. “It’s okay, Baigan. Cecil didn’t do it on purpose, right?”

“No!” the boy’s white hair danced through the air as he shook his head vigorously. “I didn’t.”

“Why don’t you take him to the kitchen, Baigan? Let him have some cake.”

Baigan bowed his head and attempted a smile. The moment he had turned away from the king, it disappeared.

He hated that little boy that was walking so happily in front of him. Once Baigan had been a little like him, almost like a son to Baron’s king. But he had been forgotten ever since this little foundling had shown up.

“Look Baigan.” Cecil turned around and showed him a wooden dagger. “I have a sword.”

Baigan took it, studied it for a moment. It was the one he had once wanted to play with, but the king had said then he had not the makings of a warrior. Apparently he thought this kid had.

“That old thing… you call that a sword?” he asked, frowning down on him.

He smiled when Cecil’s face fell. Then he headed to his room, leaving the boy alone in the hallway.
