Everywhere but with me

Everybody applauded when Edward put down his harp. He smiled sadly and looked in the distance for a moment, before taking an elegant bow.

Edge threw a look at his attendant and rolled his eyes. Things sure had been a lot simpler when Eblan didn’t have diplomatic relations with every shitty kingdom under the sun.

The worst part was that some of his subjects had begun travelling as well, and brought home things like romance novels from Baron or the latest fashion from Troia.

Edward made his way through his crowd of nobles and came to him. “I am very honoured by your presence here. Please enjoy yourself.”

“Thanks,” Edge said. “Got any beer?”

“We just serve wine today.” Edward looked down. “I am sorry.”

“That’s okay.”

Edward stopped the first servant in sight and took two glasses of his plate, downing the first one. Damcyan nobility was eyeing him, and he knew the rough behaviour of Eblan’s king was going to be the talk of the town tomorrow.

Good. He’d rather be considered unpolished than decadent.

About to drink more wine, he turned around, and stared right into Rydia’s smiling face.

He almost dropped his glass.

“Didn’t expect to see you here,” she said with a twinkle in her eye. “State-visit?”

“Yeah.” He took a deep breath to calm himself. It had been five months since he had last seen her. “Weren’t you with your friends?”

“They kicked me out.” She made a face. “Want me to spend more time with humans.”

“And then you came here?”

“Well, first I visited Rosa and Cecil for a week, oh and I spend two days at Fabul. Yang’s got a brand new training room for his monks. I was a guest teacher on magic defence.”

Edge’s mood was worsening with every word. “Anywhere else you went?”

“Not yet, but I might go to Troia, they have great bathing facilities there, I heard.”

“And you didn’t even think of stopping by at Eblan?”

She frowned. “I went there last year.”

“You and Rosa went there. You two spend most of the time wandering the market.”

Rydia shrugged. “She was heavily pregnant. Somebody needed to help her…”

Edge glared.

Rydia gave him an angry look. “I’m not royalty and the summons have no diplomatic relationships with anyone. It doesn’t matter if I…”

“That’s not the point!”

An older Damcyan noblewoman, who looked a little tipsy, pointed at him and giggled with her friend. Two haughty-looking men frowned.

“Then what is the point?” Rydia let out, throwing up her arms.

He shook his head. “Never mind.”

“Edge…?”

“Never mind, I said.” With this he stalked off, taking another cup of wine with him as he headed for the balcony, to get some fresh air.

There he finished his glass, watching Damcyan by night.

Of all the stupid things he could have done, how could he have fallen in love with a girl, who cared little for humans, and least of all for him?
