Advocates Hope Controversial Exemption is Removed from Michigan Anti-Bullying Law
Critics of Michigan's proposed anti-bullying legislation are looking to the state House to remove a controversial exemption they say allows bullying as long as it can be justified from a place of moral or religious conviction. The clause was not part of the original version of the measure, otherwise known as Matt's Safe School Law.
The move to add the exemption has drawn heavy criticism. State Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer spoke passionately against the modified version of the bill, saying it provides a "blueprint" on how to bully and get away with it. The bill passed the state Senate on Wednesday 26-11, with all 11 Democrats voting against.
