super junior, snsd ; soak up the sun
kyuhyun/seohyun ; pg ; 1718 words
she charms the lifeguard, who lets her use the pool all day for free.
note inspired by the song (if you’re wondering if i want you to) i want you to by weezer.
zero.
it’s already been summer for a month, the sun is hot and the pool has been open every day and kyuhyun might be a little sick of sweating day and night.
he’s on his way to the pool to get ready for lifeguard duty when he sees her for the first time.
one.
her brown hair is pulled up in a tight pony tail, sunglasses perched on the top of her head. kyuhyun swears he doesn’t look her up and down and that’s why he doesn’t know she is wearing a see-through white shirt and denim shorts and a red bikini.
she’s smiling at the lifeguard, joonmyun, putting a hand on the boy’s arm.
“yeah, of course you can use the pool for free,” he says.
when kyuhyun coughs loudly, they both look at him - her questioningly and joonmyun guiltily.
“we don’t do freebies,” kyuhyun says.
“oh.” she pouts at him, twirling her hair with a finger. “can’t you make an exception for me?”
two.
somehow, kyuhyun ignores pool rules and decides to let her use the pool for free for the rest of the week. seohyun (twenty years old and this is her last summer at home before she goes to university in the city) arrives at nine o’clock every morning, wearing flip-flops but not dragging them on the ground, laying down her towel on the same deck-chair every day.
she always brings a different book with her and she will spend her day reading, occasionally going for a swim or she’ll go off to buy a drink in the little cafeteria across the street.
she talks to joonmyun now and then, because they used to be classmates; they talk about school and university and their families - and sometimes, she will talk to kyuhyun. she will tell him that’s he’s doing a poor job as a lifeguard or that he’s blocking her sun.
kyuhyun doesn’t think she likes him very much, but he falls in love with her nonetheless.
three.
joonmyun invites her to a party. he doesn’t invite kyuhyun, because everyone is used to him always saying no, but kyuhyun bribes him into telling him where the party is anyway.
he arrives at the party late and when he finally finds seohyun she’s already a bit tipsy. joonmyun waves at him and seohyun twirls around to look at him, almost falling on the table behind her. she giggles loudly, clasping a hand in front of her mouth as if to stop herself, and kyuhyun can’t help but fall a little more for her.
after an hour or so, kyuhyun has reached the tipsy stage and seohyun is way past it. they have moved towards the balcony, joonmyun disappearing in the house, leaving the two of them alone.
“you know, i lied,” she says, taking another sip of her cup.
as kyuhyun turns to look towards her, he sees the evening sun covering the side of her face and he thinks she’s sort of beautiful.
“about what?” he asks.
“my name’s not seohyun, it’s joohyun.” she giggles and holds the railing of the balcony to keep herself upright.
joohyun. the name rolls around in his head, replacing seohyun in every thought he had about her. “that’s a nice name.”
“yeah,” she says, suddenly still. he looks over at her to see her staring intently at him. “it is.”
four.
the day after the party seohyun, no joohyun, doesn’t show up at the pool. kyuhyun is bored all day, scowling at children, telling people they’re making too much noise even when they aren’t and joonmyun is called to come early.
“you’re going to lose your job if you keep being like this,” joonmyun tells him.
kyuhyun just scowls and grabs his stuff, stalking out of the gates.
he treats himself to some ice cream later that day and of course that’s when he bumps into joohyun.
“hey,” she says as she sits down next to him.
“hey.”
“shouldn’t you be at work?”
“joonmyun was called in. apparently i was scaring the customers away.”
she smiles as she takes another spoonful of her ice cream. “you do look kind of grumpy and scary when you’re not smiling.”
he just raises an eyebrow at her. she ignores him though, continuing to eat her ice cream. they sit in silence for a couple of minutes, him watching her eat her ice cream as he tries to come up with something to say, but before he knows it she drops her spoon and sighs contently.
“i should go,” she says as she wipes her mouth with a napkin. she stands up, throwing the napkin in the wastebin a couple of feet away and waves at him.
he raises his hand in a goodbye gesture and returns her smile.
“you should really smile more, kyuhyun,” she says as she walks away.
five.
whenever she’s around, he starts smiling more. at first he feels like a fool, especially when joonmyun points at that he actually looks like a fool, but then he notices her looking his way more often, so he keeps doing it.
joohyun has started talking to him more - during his break, after his shift, but also during his shift. she will take the empty deck-chair next to his tower (which isn’t really a tower, it’s just slightly higher than a normal chair) and talk to him about the book she’s reading, or her favorite music and sometimes she will tell him something about what she used to do when she was younger.
and he talks back to her; he tells her about how clumsy he was back in high school, how he got this job as a lifeguard to help his parents pay for university and how he secretly likes to sing in the shower.
she will smile at him, bring him cold drinks and splash him with water. in return, he will grin at her, move his tower when it’s blocking her sun and help her rub sunscreen on her back with blushing cheeks.
six.
during the summer months there are always a lot of parties and usually kyuhyun doesn’t go. but then joohyun asks him to and he can’t do anything but say yes. they promise to meet halfway, walking the last part together.
they make small talk as they walk to the party, arms brushing now and then, making goose bumps appear on his arm despite the hot weather.
she doesn’t leave his side once, following him around the house and up the stairs, standing next to him on one of the many balconies. they both flush in embarrassment at the noises coming from the room next to them, deliberately looking different ways and bursting out in laughter as they meet eyes.
he points out the little church and tells her the street on the right has a coffee shop owned by his friend’s family, but the street on the left has a very nice coffee shop that is owned by his mother and he jokingly says she should go there from now on, because she will get a discount if she mentions him.
“maybe you should take me there once,” she says softly.
they both fall silent and kyuhyun alternates between looking at his feet and sneaking glances at her.
eventually, he coughs and straightens up. “yeah, yeah, i should.”
she smiles and grabs his hand. “come on, let’s get something else to drink.”
seven.
it must be one of the hottest days in summer when he finally has the guts to ask her out. well, to invite her to come with him to his mother’s coffee shop. he did plan to ask her out, call it a date and everything, but then she smiled and he went blank for a while, missing the moment to say it’s a date, yeah?
his legs are plastered to the seat in the bus, but it doesn’t really matter because joohyun’s leg is pressing right against his.
“you know,” she says, laughing all of sudden, “you’re actually taking me to meet your mother.”
“yeah,” he says, thinking how weird it is to take have your first-date-but-not-really-a-date in your mother’s coffee shop. “but that’s okay, she’s always nice to my friends.”
“friends,” she repeats. “right.”
his mother likes joohyun more than she likes him. he needs to pay for his drink and cookies, but she gets everything for free.
“you’re such a lovely girl,” his mother says and joohyun flushes slightly as she whispers thank you.
kyuhyun rolls his eyes as he takes a bite of his cookie angrily.
eight.
for some reason they always end up on a balcony when they go to a party. kyuhyun doesn’t realize he says this out loud until joohyun snorts and pokes him in the side.
“you keep dragging me out to balconies,” she says.
“i do not.” he bumps his shoulder into hers, shaking his head while laughing. “you’re the one who keeps following me.”
“only because you would drag me with you if i didn’t.”
“can i ever win with you?”
she grins at him, shaking her head in denial as she ruffles his hair.
they fall into a comfortable silence then, occasionally bumping their shoulders together as they sip their drinks. at one point he turns to staring at her, only to find she’s staring straight back at him.
“hey,” joohyun whispers, smile playing on her lips.
for some reason kyuhyun finds himself reaching out for her, twining their fingers together. “hey,” he whispers back.
then she leans forward, until she’s leaning against him and their lips are pressed together awkwardly. it’s not the best kiss he’s ever had, but kyuhyun thinks it couldn’t be more perfect.
nine.
it’s already been summer for three months, the sun is hot and the pool has been open every day and kyuhyun might be a little sick of sweating day and night.
he’s on his way to the pool to get ready for lifeguard duty when he sees her sitting on the edge of the pool, legs kicking softly in the water. kyuhyun smiles as she tilts her head, squinting her eyes to look up at him.
“hey,” joohyun says, taking his hands as he helps her up.
“hey, you’re early.”
she smiles and links their fingers together. “i was waiting for you.”
