The Weekend, In Which We Are Fed A Lot

Apr 12, 2010 09:37

I'm at jury duty right now. I don't mind, I'm getting paid to hang out and play on the laptop all day, or read, or whatever. Not sure how I feel about actually serving on a jury since I've never been picked before. Could be interesting. My mom works at City Hall, so she's taking me out to lunch when we get a break. We are finally going to Hamburger Mary's, a place I've been wanting to try for a while. It's a gay hamburger place. How cool is that? How cool is it that my mom is the one that told me about it?

Uh oh, they are calling numbers. Don't call me, I have LJ reading to catch up on! No time to serve my civic duty!

Anyway, I just wrapped up another busy weekend:

Friday - Casey and I got the chance to be in the Mardi Gras parade, thanks to Club 52 (that volunteer organization I recently got into). We wore ridiculous outfits, rode on a giant gator and threw beads into the crowds. It was a lot of fun. And then we got off and headed to the Sheryl Crow concert. She was great, but we had to leave about an hour in because Casey couldn't breathe around all the cigarette smoke. She has a really strong reaction to it, which I guess is a good thing because she really cannot ever start smoking. But even though you technically aren't supposed to smoke in the parks except in designated areas, nobody cares and it's everywhere, especially during the concerts. So we kept moving around, but everywhere we went there was more smoke and she couldn't breathe, so we went home. It was just as well, even at that rate we didn't get home until 11:30 and we were both pretty tired.

Saturday - We slept in, which seems to be a pretty rare event lately, so that was nice. That afternoon I dropped Casey off at a Spring Fling picnic her friend's neighborhood was having (bounce houses, face painting, snow cones, etc.) and went home to work on laundry, bills, etc. That evening we met my parents, brother and aunt for Casey's birthday dinner at Olive Garden (which was funny, because she spent a lot of time trying to think of somewhere unique and fun to go... I got feedback on Facebook, she asked friends, and in the end we went to the Olive Garden. Which is delicious, but not exactly innovative. It's hard to find something that will make everyone happy and not cost a fortune though). They sang to her and she got a small cake to take home. And she got some money and gift cards, the standard gift for teenagers. Ha ha. She loves it though.

Sunday - Church and then blueberry pancakes at Cracker Barrel with my parents, and then my mom took Casey shopping for clothes (again, ha. I told her at the rate she claims to be outgrowing her clothes, she should be a giant by now) and I got groceries. That afternoon Casey's awesome step-mom took us, along with her friends Andy, Elise and Briana out to a late birthday lunch at Bucca DiBeppo. They have the most amazing italian food there, and of course we got way too much of it (this place is big on getting huge bowls of pasta and sharing). We brought home enough leftovers to eat for a month, plus the remainder of a giant cupcake she'd gotten when they sang happy birthday to her, and the brownies I scooped out of the bottom of the largest brownie sundae EVAR.

That evening we went to a meeting for the mission trip Casey will be attending in Tennessee in June. It's going to be a great experience for her. For the first 3 days they spend the majority of their day working on whatever their project will be (we don't know for sure, but it will likely involve some form of painting, building, cleaning, etc.) and then every night they have fun activities and themed dinners where they are encouraged to dress up (semi-formal, dress like a celebrity, powder puff football, Christmas in June, etc.), and then the last 2 days are all for fun. They are going white water rafting, which I'm completely jealous of. They have to pay an extra $30 for that, and Miss Tina told us parents not to just pay for it. She was like "You give them money too easily. Make them earn it." Ha ha, I like her. We can use some of the vast fortune Casey has accumulated from birthday and Christmas money. She's much richer than I am anyway.
