It's been a busy day, and there's still plenty to do.
This morning I slept too late and Casey was slow, so she was 15 minutes late for religious ed class. So not like us. Yeah, right. But she has never been quite that late. Oh well. She brought home some make up work from the bit she missed. I'll have to remember to get her to do that sometime within the next two weeks. While she was in class, I got dressed for church (in a fabulous outfit I got from Jean yesterday), started some more laundry and worked on my grocery list. Then I picked her up and we met my parents for church.
After church, we went to Dennys. I was proud of myself for having a turkey sandwich and apple sauce. The sandwich wasn't all that low in fat... it was toasted with cheese and everything, but it's not as bad as a lot of things I could have had, and for me to pass up fries and have apple sauce instead is a big deal. Casey had her usual chicken tenders and mozzarella sticks, but had a salad with it. Still not great. I never worried much about what she ate before because she was always slender and her checkups were fine. But now that I'm paying attention, I see that she eats crap. It's my fault, of course. But it surprises me how much junk she asks for. She does like fruit and some veggies, so that's good and I have been encouraging her to eat that. She's sucking on a lemon right now. ICK.
When we left Dennys, Casey started telling me about how she has a boyfriend. It went something like this:
"In 4th and 5th grade, if a boy likes a girl and she likes him back, you are boyfriend and girlfriend. We don't kiss or anything. It just means you like each other."
"And you have a boyfriend?"
"Yes"
"Who?"
"Kyle"
"Didn't Danielle like Kyle last year?"
"She did? Oh, I forgot..... oh yeah, I forgot I broke up with Kyle. I found out he was the most dumbest kid in the class."
Yeah, because that statement made her seem so intelligent. LOL.
"Did you hold hands?"
"Almost, but then I told him he was dumped."
Tee hee.
We went home to change (into another fabulous, yet more casual outfit I got from Jean)and go through her cookbook to find something for dinner tonight. As part of our week 2 fitness plan (which I'll post in a minute), we are supposed to try a fish recipe. Casey was immediately turned off by that idea, saying she hates fish. Well, she hasn't given it much of a chance. I told her she was at least trying it. We found a recipe that was very much like the chicken tenders we made last week, but this time it's with catfish. Easy, because we'd bought most of the ingredients before and still had some. My mom suggested switching the catfish for cod, because we'd both be more likely to eat it. So that's what I ended up getting.
Casey didn't want to go grocery shopping with me, so I dropped her off with my parents. Fine with me, it makes it SO much easier and faster. I got tons of fruit and vegetables. I also got Willow a stuffed gorilla that screams when you squeeze it. I thought it was really funny, and it was in the 88 cent dog toys bin. Well, it was in the wrong bin. I noticed when she rang it up it was like 6 bucks. Oh well. And guess what? It lasted about 5 minutes. Willow almost immediately pulled out the little contraption that makes the screeching noise, and started throwing it around. I got it and tossed it. Then she pulled all the stuffing out and left it all over the floor. Great. But she'll still play with the rest of the doll, so it's not a total wash.
Casey is upstairs cleaning her room. Jada was helping her (or I hope she was), but just left. I did a little clean up, I'm working on laundry, and I'm about to figure out what's next on the to do list.
So, here's week 2 of our plan, which starts today.
Family Project
Have a family meeting to discuss the progress you made during the first week. What worked? What didn’t? What was fun? What was unrewarding? What have you learned? What else do you want to change? Make notes in your journal. (eh... this week was so short since we got the passwords late, I don't think it's necessary)
As a family, learn how to read food labels by studying items in your kitchen. (Refer to Chapter 9 in your SuperSized Kids book, especially page 145, for tips on label). (OH yeah... we need to do that)
Plan to shop together for groceries once a month and be sure to review food labels at the store. (Okay)
Activities
Begin planning exercise for the week for each family member. (Did this last week)
Mealtimes at Home
Reduce desserts to smaller portions and no more than one per day. Try replacing desserts with fresh fruit (we don't really have desserts anyway)
Turn off the TV during meals. (Okay)
Children who are old enough to do so can serve their own plates. (and she will)
Nutrition
Reduce red meat to no more than three meals a week. (Casey hardly eats any, and I don't eat much of it either. This should be pretty easy)
Begin trying new fish recipes or vegetarian protein recipes. (making cod tonight)
Rest
Set and enforce bedtime and wake-up time (I already do that)
Media
Try a TV-free night one day this week (Gulp! This one scares me a little, because we are both so used to TV at night. I decided to make it Saturday, because it's the one night I don't have any shows on. We'll play games, and then after she goes to sleep, I'll do homework.)
And that's it. I don't think it will be too difficult. I meant to weigh myself today and totally forgot. I'll try to remember to do it tomorrow and I'll let you know my progress from the first week.
Here's my to do list for today:
Continue laundry
Set up a website to start collecting money for Paws In The Park event (I'll be posting about this shortly... we are going to be looking for donations for a dog walk to benefit the SPCA)
Homework... read chapter 3, answer one case analysis question and look at information on research project
Clean up the porch
Give Willow a bath
Job search
Read about food labels in supersized kids book and go over information with Casey
And would you look at that, it's already 5. Damn, I need longer weekends.
