ok, Livejournal's being weird...

My livejournal ID is budgie_uk.

OK? Not with a hyphen, i.e. budgie-uk, but with an underscore.

Now I know that Livejournal regards hyphens and underscores as the same thing, but I've noticed today that it's stopped treating them the same.

So if I refer to a post, say, http://budgie_uk.livejournal.com/678579.html, an error occurs when clicking on the link, whereas http://budgie-uk.livejournal.com/678579.html is fine.

And yet, weirdly, if I type the shortcut with a hyphen in it, i.e. budgie-uk, it comes out as budgie-uk when posted... yet if you click on the budgie_uk, it takes you to, wait for it: http://budgie-uk.livejournal.com (with a hyphen, not an underscore).

What's going on?

Similarly, _tonylee_, your livejournal URL seems to have switched from http://_tonylee_.livejournal.com to http://users.livejournal.com/_tonylee_, a format that hasn't been current for some time.

Strange - please, livejournal, can I have my underscores back?

OK, here's the responses from Livejournal.LiveJournal has recently become stricter with URL formats.

Specifically, because underscores are not allowed in hostnames, URLs containing underscores in the hostname do not work correctly for all users. Also, because hostname components may not begin or end with a hyphen, usernames that begin and/or end with an underscore have standardized URLs under http://www.livejournal.com/users/.

Until recently, both formats (hyphens and underscores) would be accepted; however, now, the non-standard URLs are intended to redirect to the standard URL and may no longer be accepted.

As for users whose usernames begin and/or end with an underscore, these users are eligible for a free rename token if they would like to change their username to one that does not begin and/or end with an underscore, so that they, too, can use the standard http://exampleusername.livejournal.com/ URL format.

It is not planned to re-enable URLs of the type http://budgie_uk.livejournal.com/ or http://_tonylee_.livejournal.com/ (that contain underscores).

So, basically, if you've got an underscore in your username, you're buggered. Hm, there's only 20 or 30 people on my friends list alone who have underscores... so this won't affect that many people, I'm sure...
