Tuesday was day one of the apartment search. I saw three places and each was nicer than the next.
Apartment 1# - (Keningston, Brooklyn) This was a one bedroom apartment that had been transformed into a two bedroom apartment. In addition to the two bedrooms, there was a small kitchen and bathroom. Simple enough. Now here's what got me about this place: You put an ad in CL stating you have a room to rent, you contact me, schedule an appointment, but you don't clean up your apartment, let alone the actual room...?!?! You're trying to make this place appealing, right? So, I was definitely turned off by this place and the guy, we'll call him "Mike", was also kinda creepy... I wasn't feeling it.
Apartment 2# - (Washington Heights, Manhattan) This was a super sunny, narrow two bedroom apartment. The actual apartment was really charming. It had a nice size kitchen, living room, and bathroom in addition to the bedrooms. It was sort of in the style of a railroad apartment only there was a hallway which all the rooms ran off from. The whole apartment was on the west side of the building, so it got a ton of sun and had a lovely view of the river and Jersey. I was really loving this place even after though it was on the 5th floor without an elevator in the building. Here's what got me: "Wendy" was a sweet chinese girl who had only live in NY since September. She spoken slightly broken english, but this wasn't the problem. When I first came into her place, her parents were there. After showing me the place (and me loving it), she explained that her parents were visiting from China. No problem there. Then she told me that they would be moving back in June. What?
"So, I would be living with you and your parents?" I asked.
"Only temporarily...," she explained.
Yeah, not so much.
Apartment 3# - (back to Keningston, Brooklyn) A three bedroom apartment with one and a half bathrooms, a large kitchen and living room. It was 3 blocks from the subway, grocery store, and 24 hr laundry. "Peggy" was a really sweet chinese, fashion major. She fixed me a tea while we sat and talked. We had a lot in common and the place was really great. She explained how it would be three people living there, but the other roommate was NEVER around. I laughed and total her about the last apartment with the surprise chinese family. She wanted me to move in and even started to pressure me a little. I told her I would have to sleep on it.
I was debating about whether or not to go with only the three place I had seen when I got a call offering me a job in the summer designing in Iowa. Random.
Now I was really torn! I had stopped thinking about going away for the summer after both the California job and the Texas Job didn't pan out. I had just figured I would spend the summer in the city for a change.
After much contemplating, I decided to take the summer job (yay!) and prolong the move until after the summer. Unfortunately, this means I will be staying with my current living situation a bit longer, but the end is in sight!
At least I got some practice at looking for a place in NYC...
