Chapter VI:

(Thursday, 2:33 p.m. Martha’s time)

Martha cried her way to sleep in the cold atmosphere. She shivered, not having much on her body, hiding away in a cave, hidden behind a few rocks, trees, and a low cliff nearby. It was New Zealand, how could she forget how beautiful it was in the mornings? But it was dangerous when night fell, and the Toclafane were searching for her.

“Oh, wait a minute, I do! I've got his hand! And if Lazarus made himself younger, what if I reverse it? Another... hundred years?” The scream a man she knew as the Doctor echoed repeatedly.

Martha’s heartbeat quickened, almost racing out of her chest as the Master’s image was came to her. But they weren’t on the Valiant, facing down at each other. She didn’t know where they were, it was a void, a dark void that eluded coldness.

No words were spoken between them.

A smirk appeared on his face but as quick as he appeared, he disappeared in front of her eyes.

”The people will remember,” a small voice said into Martha’s ear before she woke up.

Martha awoke with goose bumps covering her skin. She was panting, her chest heaved in and out as she wiped the sweat from her forehead. Looking around, she almost forgot where she was as well.

This wasn’t her bed back in her flat; this…was the bed in the TARDIS.

She let out a relieved sigh and leaned back against the pillows. Her room in the TARDIS hadn’t changed a bit, well, except for the wall colors. They were now a deep dark red color, one of her new favorite colors.

Martha threw off the covers from her lower body and stumbled out of the bed. She couldn’t get the dream off her mind. It wasn’t a dream, it was a nightmare. She thought she had gotten over them.

“The people will remember,” Martha repeated as she felt the TARDIS trying to comfort her.

“Did you get an answer?” Gwen was asking, staring at Jack who had just hung up the phone.

By the look on his face, the answer was no.

”No, and I’ve tried her cell too. No pick up.” Jack responded, getting up from his desk, walking over to a large screen that was hooked up to a computer and its mainframe.

“Well, she couldn’t have just disappeared.” Gwen exclaimed, following him. She watched him let out a breath and shook his head slightly. “Have you tried calling her mother?”

Now that wasn’t a bad idea.

Mickey stopped his vehicle at a red light.

His fingers tapped on the steering wheel as the radio was turned up some. He wasn’t a fan of the radio, not by a long shot.

Looking out the side window, he saw a man that he thought he had recognized walking down the street, almost going into the direction a nearby bridge.

”No, that couldn’t be…” he thought, only seeing him from behind. The light above changed to green, he took his foot off the brake and decided to make a round-about trip, pulling to the side of street and locked the doors behind him. Mickey decided to follow the male figure that was only in front of him, walking around in a daze.

Red Converse All Star sneakers confirmed it all.

“Doctor?”

He stopped and Mickey caught up, moving to stand in front of the man who was the Doctor. Minus his usual jacket and dress shirt, it was him.

The Doctor was in a daze, having a blank expression on his face. He didn’t seem to notice Mickey snapping his fingers in front of him. “I want…” he started to speak and Mickey’s eyebrow rose slightly. “I want…Martha.” He finished, blinking.

He sounded like a child who wanted his favorite toy back.

It wasn’t like Martha to let the Doctor wander off. She knew better than that! Unless...the wheels in Mickey’s mind started to turn, gathering up that Martha was not around.

“I’ll take you someplace safe. Come with me.” Mickey responded, leading the Doctor to his parked vehicle.

“Hello?”

“Mrs. Jones?” Jack paused, not sure if she was going by ‘Miss’ or ‘Mrs.’ at the moment. “This is Jack,” he was cut off by Francine.

“How can I forget you? But the fact that you are calling me is making me worry.” Francine replied, in the process of cleaning up her kitchen. “So spit it out.”

Jack held back a laugh he was holding and got serious. He did grow to like her and the feeling was vice versa. “Well, um, I tried calling Martha a couple of times today, at her home and on her cell, and um, I got no answer. Do you know where she could be?”

Martha not picking up wasn’t her daughter. “No, I can’t say that I don’t. But wait, isn’t the Doctor staying with her?”

”How do you know about that?” Jack was curious to know.

“Martha told me a few days ago when I called. Didn’t he answer?”

“No, and the Doctor’s really keen about talking so unless he isn’t there either…” Jack treaded off, and both were thinking of the same thing.

”You don’t think…?” Francine treaded off.

“I don’t know what to say to that. Just, if Martha calls, tell her to call me.” Jack replied and heard the large door to the hub opening from behind.

”I will,” Francine said. “Take care, Jack.”

”You too,” Jack hung up and heard Mickey’s voice interacting with Gwen and a voice that sounded too familiar.

The TARDIS landed and materialized on the planet known as Yesnor II.

“Are you sure this is it?” Martha asked into the air and got a hum in an immediate response from the TARDIS.

Martha had changed out of her original clothing and into something more practical. After a long and well deserved shower, Martha stepped out of the TARDIS threshold wearing a black jacket over a black vest top. It was almost déjà vu with her stepping out into a strange world but without him.

The planet had this certain glow about it, and inside, it made her feel almost overjoyed. The skies were a light green, contrasting against two suns on different sides of her. It was breathtaking.

There were humans on the planet as well, though she did stick out like a sore thumb.

A mental image entered her mind of what she was looking for, thanks to the TARDIS. It was of a creature known as a Kryik and as far as she knew, she hadn’t encountered one yet.

A small boy running in the distance was screaming something at the top of his lungs. Martha didn’t notice, she was busy looking at her surroundings, hoping to take it all in before getting down to serious business. It was then that her body collided with something shorter than her. It was the child.

”Excuse me,” the boy replied, he looked up at Martha with dark green eyes. He appeared to be human but something her stomach told her otherwise. “But The Salvation is coming! I must tell everyone!” He exclaimed, running around and away from her and she stared at the figure getting smaller and smaller. Martha, a bit surprised, watched him go around the corner. She cleared her throat and proceeded to head further into the city.

Hopefully, there she could find some answers.

“And that’s pretty much where I found him. He seems almost like he’s in a daze, extremely quiet, and honestly, I’m freaking out. You can’t tell, but I am!” Mickey exclaimed, leaning against the coffee machine.

The Doctor was just standing there, in the corner, looking out the window.

“He keeps saying that he wants you know who.” Mickey whispered as the other Torchwood members just stared. To Ianto and Gwen, this was the first time seeing him, face to face, person to…alien.

“Is he alright though?” Gwen asked out of their silent observation.

”Yes,” Mickey stated, pausing before he spoke again. “And no. We don’t have much time, Martha’s gone AWOL and what are we going to do?”

”Calm down!” Jack shook him by the shoulders. “Martha’s a smart girl, she can handle herself. And since the TARDIS is also missing, I can put two and two together and assume she is safe.” Jack responded.

”Wait, the TARDIS is gone?” Gwen asked.

“Yes, I’ve been keeping track of it and it disappears on the same day that Martha goes missing? Coincidence? I think not.”

”But wait a minute; you’re saying that she can fly the…TARDIS?” Gwen asked again. She couldn’t help the fact that all of this was still intriguing her.

”The TARDIS can fly itself. The Doctor pilots it mostly, but it is possible the TARDIS is helping her.” Jack explained, watching the Doctor now pace back and forth, mumbling something under his breath.

“So what are we going to do with him?” Ianto finally spoke up behind Jack, wearing a black dress shirt without his usual tie.

“We keep him here since Martha isn’t around and see where things go.” Jack announced, and everyone seemed to agree.

The Doctor was to stay in the Hub with them….

Martha’s feet had led her to what appeared to be a very large library.

Overwhelmed, she zipped up her jacket and walked up the stairs various stone steps. She got a few passing glances, but she couldn’t worry about the way she looked, or the fact that she was different.

She learned that when she started traveling with the Doctor.

Once she had entered the library, she let out a breath and went up more stairs to see where everyone grouped. To the left of her, there was a large crowd of children of different races and species sitting on the floor. They seemed to be very interested in what was being told to them.

She only caught pieces of what was said.

“And the myth is that the Salvation will heal all people and restore peace. The Salvation can travel space and time, creating redemption…” But by that time, Martha had spaced out, missing out whatever else was said.

“Hmm, apparently whoever this person is has a lot on their shoulders”, Martha said to herself before she asked for help.

(Friday, 4:10 a.m., Martha’s time)

The Doctor had found his way to Martha’s desk. He followed a scent of chocolate and lavender, something he associated her heavily with.

Cocking his head to the side, looking at it like it was some foreign object, he clinched the edge of the desk with his hand. Gone were his dark brown eyes that held so much passion, science, mystery behind them.

He had officially given up his inner battle with the darkness inside of him, and the darkness overcame him, feeling weak, and his heart was cold. Those eyes that had captured everyone’s attention was now gone, black replaced the brown.

And then, he felt his head hit the ground.

A/N: I swear these chapters keep getting longer and longer. Any who, yes there is another story arc going on in here that actually makes a lot of sense. I know what’s going to happen and you don’t, but please bear with me! Martha’s gone, the Doctor is in the hub, and what is The Salvation you wonder? All will be revealed soon, I promised. And I had to throw in the Master because it just fitted the mood of the chapter. Dark, creepy, mysterious, like him, minus that attractive factor he has. Mmm… I don't know how I knocked out 2 chapters in one day, but I guess.
