Brokeback Mountain just destroyed me six ways from Sunday. Or however that phrase goes. I don't really care right now.
- THE SHIRT. That stupid, stinking shirt. I fucking teared up when Ennis pulled that out, even when I KNEW it was going to happen. Such a stupid thing to get teary over, but dammit, Ennis' FACE when he saw that!
- It's a beautiful, amazing movie. I realize that a lot of people resent the message it brings across, that being gay is eventually going to end in devastation, but I'm just going to take it for what it was intended to be - a really gorgeous love story that was a complete train wreck right from the very beginning.
- My favorite scene has to be the second time they're in the tent, when Jack is shirtless. I realize I should care more about how well I thought Michelle Williams did as Alma or how incredibly AMAZING Heath Ledger was, but I don't - I care about that beautiful, beautiful scene where they so hesitantly kiss and you can hear Ennis whisper, "Sorry" and Jack whisper, "It's all right." Nothing in cinema has melted me so hard ever before in my life.
- Fucking Heath Ledger, man. He was beyond awesome as Ennis. I don't know what else to say. He blew me away.
- "I wish I knew how to quit you" - I was scared of how that line was going to be delivered, but I shouldn't have been, because it was perfect and that's all there is to it.
- I was seriously impressed with Jake Gyllenhaal as well. That scene where he's driving his truck, all excited and singing along to the radio because Ennis is finally divorced and it's finally going to happen, and he looks so fucking hopeful when he sees Ennis - argh, dammit, that completely broke me. Not to mention him tearing up in the car on the way back. Jack got let down SO MANY DAMN TIMES and yet he still kept hoping that it was gonna happen for them someday.
- The one who's worse off is Ennis, though. The final scene, where he's walking around in his trailer and carefully folding his clothes, I kept thinking, "god, he's so alone and was he ever really happy for any long period of time?" That really stuck with me. Ennis' story is so, so tragic and I'm not even sure he realizes it himself.
Really, I have so so much more to say, but I don't really know how to say it right now. The movie was exactly what I was expecting it to be, but nothing like I could've imagined - if that makes any sense at all. I was very, very pleasantly surprised. And, you know, devastated. But whatever. I wanna see it again as soon as possible.
In more cheery news, I got more presents from you guys today!
