I went to Stovers Farm orchard today for apple picking. It was only me, Josh, Carrie and her family, which was nice. I do better with small groups. Josh and I went off on our own somehow and found the biggest apples I've ever seen. They're about the same size as both of John's fists together. And they are wonderful! Sweet, juicy, crispy but not hard - and unnamed. Figures. The guy who worked there told me it was a red delicious. Umm... no. Considering the fact that they aren't even shaped the same, taste nothing like them, are mostly yellow and were in a different part of the orchard, I think he's a big fat liar who tried to come off like he knew it all and failed. Josh says they taste like candy, Carrie says Angels and I say applegasm. Whatever; they're good.
I didn't go overboard like some people did - seriously, what are you going to do with 50 pounds of apples?! I bought 11 and I'm stumped as to what to do with them all before they go bad. Then there was of course shopping in the barn that was full of everything from fruit, jams and candy to halloween decorations and stray cats. It was a stunning day for it too; cool, sunny, breezy. The sky was just breathtaking as the rays of the sun pierced the clouds and spotlighted the trees, the apples gleaming from the morning dew. We didn't get the hayride, which I was a bit disappointed about and I had to break my travel rule (if it takes me one hour to get there and one hour to get back, the minimum amount of time I have to spend there is two hours to make it worth it) but it's only once a year and it was worth it in this instance. There were many goofy pictures of all of us posing with apples and each other which I'm sure will wind up on someone's Facebook.
Aside from one kitty deciding she was going to get Josh to pet her no matter what (he eventually won that argument (in such a polite way!) with her thanks to the bale of hay that suddenly needed to be climbed), I think we all had a good time. It's not quite Mabon yet, which falls in the work week, so today is my day to celebrate the turning of the earth and change of seasons. And this was a perfect way to spend a Mabon morning.
