"Everybody knows that the war is over, everybody knows that the good guys lost" - Everybody Knows by Leonard Cohen (though I prefer the Rufus Wainwright version, personally.)
When they tell him the war is over, Bill's not quite sure what to do. He never prepared for this-he'd imagined he'd be fighting until he eventually died. And after everything he saw down there on the planet, he can't quite believe that the Cylons really left, really surrendered.
He knows they'll be back.
Of course, nobody believes him.
"Can't you just be happy?" his buddy says when they're mustered out. "War's over. We won
( ... )
"Gods dammit," Saul muttered, rubbing his thigh. "Bill, I don't bend that way anymore."
"Sorry." Bill straightened up, wincing as he moved his own leg out from under him. "This was a hell of a lot easier when we were young."
Saul snickered. "Young? If I recall, when we met, I was still two thousand if I was a day."
The corner's of Bill's lips twitched. "Yeah, but you looked twenty-nine. You were twenty-nine enough for me."
"That's sweet of you."
"So," Bill said, leaning back against the wall behind his rack, "if you're a Cylon, why are you…" He paused.
Saul smirked. "So old? Couldn't tell you." His face fell briefly. "Oh, Bill, I wish you'd known me when I was young. I was young two millennia before you were even born."
"It doesn't matter," Bill murmured, drawing him close, trying to keep him in a comfortable position. "I loved you when I was young and I love you when I'm old. You've always been there for me and that's what matters."
