Hello! I’m a long-time lurker and almost first-time snarker (I think I tried snarking the BSC postcard set many years ago but only did a fraction of them). I'm also incredibly shy, so I don't comment much, even though I read and love the entries that you all post. I've been wanting to snark a book for awhile now, and I finally have some free time,

So is my daughter. :). She also doesn't understand sarcasm...at all. She's very literal. If you haven't seen the new Power Rangers movie, SEE IT. Billy is autistic, and the way that he's portrayed is so wonderful that I cried right there in the theater.
By the way, my daughter really wants an answer to "Why did the chicken cross the road?" that isn't "to get to the other side."
And I know SMS has a dance every time someone shits, but they also have a Prom?
I don't think Ann knows that a prom is if middle-schoolers have the in her little world.
“Wait. You mean you can’t have a cross between a monkey and a horse because they’re not in the same family?”
No, Claudia. They can't. Animals can't breed if they're different genuses either. Two species in the same genus can breed, but the offspring would be infertile (like a mule, which is a cross between a horse and a donkey, two species in the same genus). If two different genus animals can't mate, then animals in different families also can't mate. (Even though we were told "science is for boys" when I was a kid, I still kicked ass at it, and remember this stuff.)
Hmm, one sentence in and my head is already spinning. Where was I?
That's it. You're one of us. You've been initiated into snarking. :D Once you hit the "WTF did I just read?" moment, you're official. :D
it sounds like while yeah, she’s not a “real genius,” she’s not stupid, either.
She's mentally lazy. That's her problem. When she's interested or motivated, she does fine. When she's not, then everything goes down the crapper.
And then I read the line where she says she felt “devastated, destroyed, and humiliated,” and I feel like a jerk for not being as sympathetic.
If it makes you feel better to know, I'll admit I'm not at all sympathetic to her either. She doesn't try. This is a consequence of not trying. I'd feel sympathy if she tried and still failed, but she didn't try!
where each grade elects a king and a queen. Then there’s a coronation ceremony, the winners pick their best friends to be attendants, and they all work together to plan the problem prom
So three kings and three queens? How the hell would that work? And then those six plan the prom with all their best friends? What a clusterfuck.
Is this how it is at real proms? I didn’t go to mine. But in what world is it appropriate for two students who are not a couple (or even if they are) to be expected to kiss?
None of this is how proms work. I was in prom committee my junior year, and so was more involved than most people will ever be. To get on the committee, you submit your name, and whoever is in charge can take those names or pare down how many there are, if there are too many. That group, made of people who've expressed an interest in planning, plan the thing. There's no "let's elect a bunch of kings and queens to plan their own event" thing.
Prom is also junior and senior year of high school. Some schools separate the by year, but most have one prom, and junior or senior is just reference to the year you go.
You know, the marshmallows THAT HAD BEEN PICKED UP OFF THE FLOOR during their food fight.
Eh. No biggie. I've got a kid who does stuff like that, and we moms are the grossest people since we do it too since we just plain stop caring. :D
Hey, this sounds fun: Baby-sitters Club, the musical. Book and lyrics by Mallory, choreography by Jessi, and set design by Claudia. Fan fic idea, anybody?
I...I think I must do this....
The Addisons need a sitter every Thursday for the next month. Apparently their son Sean is an arsonist?
Dafuq? What the hell kind of parents call a group of 11- and 13-year-olds to babysit their arsonist child? I remember that book. In real life, he'd have ended up in juvie. Those parents are extremely neglectful to be hiring the BSC when they need to be directly monitoring him now.
