My dad is a Type 1 brittle diabetic, and he doesn't have to watch his diet so carefully now, because he has an insulin pump. But in 1991 or so? Yeah, he really could never eat a bite of candy (unless his sugar was really low and needed to be brought up) and he had to be extremely careful with exercise and carb counting, and he *still* had major highs and lows in his blood glucose. For a while, I was calling an ambulance for him just about every month, because his sugar would go high and then crash really low and he'd pass out and convulse.
He never had to watch out for processed cheese though.
Same with my husband's first wife. She was a brittle diabetic since birth. Basically, she was everything that Stacy said diabetics are. Then again, most young folks are Type 1 diabetics and it's really awful. Unfortunately, she passed away at age 28 from her diabetes.
EDIT: My husband does agree that maybe in BSC land "diabetes" is really just code for gohnasylphilherpelaids. In the Marines, they were told to watch out for catching ALL THE STDS!
Thanks for sharing that. I'm really sorry to hear about your husband's first wife, how awful. I've heard about people having major diabetes and passing away young and now I definitely understand what it is to be "brittle" more than before. I know we laugh about Stacey and the one M&M and Ann throwing in that detail to correct herself, but what a terrible thing. My friend just got diagnosed as Type 1 and he almost ended up in a diabetic coma because he had a terrible diet and walked around without knowing he had it. Now he takes insulin shots five times a day and is doing a lot better.
I don't think she would have fainted had she had an M&M but her blood sugar was hard to control. My BFF works for the American Diabetes Association and she also said that kids with diabetes do have a harder time keeping their blood sugar in check. Party it's because they forget and partly is because their bodies don't know what to do.
Seriously though, I think Stacy just had something funky that she picked up from that 40 year old lifeguard she mooned over. ;)
Sorry this is late, but thank you for sharing that. It really clears things up and gives more insight into the brittle condition. I think they probably got complaints from readers who were diabetic so Ann through it in to cover her tracks.
I'm glad he has an insulin pump now and I hope he's doing better!
