I've had one thing that's really bothered me for the last couple of years. It was a problem I'd created so I wouldn't have to deal with myself. I was trying to make it too easy. This problem I created was the flow. I'd become obsessed with rap, had been since the first time I saw a young Mc video. We had a tumultuous history, I'd never been able to identify with the gangsta rap surrounding my bitter adolescent stage and rap/metal was fed to me. I embraced horrorcore music to vent my frustrations and stresses, I channeled it, the same thing most people I knew did to rap or "true metal". For some reason subconscious I tend to gravitate to the expected loser the one who expects it's lower level with some aloof satisfaction. Most rap metal acts were never trying to be serious, some were neat though. It was the loser in the pop culture archetype race.
Now I'm in this indy hip hip nerd rap backpack thing and I love it. The music is great and it makes me think, and these rappers are smart. I wish to be percieved as smart, I'll learn to rap. It'll show I have style too. I couldn't find myt flow. Angry, nerdy, slam poet, horrorcore, fast whatever. Just couldn't get it right. The occassional great freestyle but for the most part mediocrity or the occasional night I had nothingv. I couldn't find my flow.
Tonight it hit me. It's not about the flow, granted each rapper has a signature but the key is to be adaptive. The flow is to have no flow, to bastardize the dao a little. It's not to have one good flow but to just flow, it's not about the sound. It's the emotion the feel of it. I was listening to Lucy Ford and you could just hear the regret. That's what real flow is, real flow isn't a sound it's the ability to create
Like I said, tonight it hit. I found something more important than the flow: the sound. A flow will right a verse but a sound makes a song. Check it: Hip Hop meets Nine inch Nails. I mean think about the repurcussions. Imagine if hip hop had been influenced by david bowie. Or maybe the violent femmes. The cure could certainly make some samples.
What if Aesop Rock met MSI? Think of that for a second. Not exatly rap metal or anything. Mainly hip hop stay close to it. Just interject a sung line here and there, like a mini chorus.
sort of a:
4 bar/4bar rhyme.
4 bar sung line which worksa in a bridge to switch up beat.
8bar/4bar
8bar chorus (maybe not using sung line)
etc. . . you get it?
