Weekend update

Apr 19, 2020 18:53

Well, it's more of the same here, but I guess that's good. I went to the supermarket earlier than I wanted yesterday because my last remaining milk turned sour and I couldn't have tea at breakfast ugh. So I spent a lot of time in a queue, and it was properly busy at checkouts. I really want to avoid that next week. But I got home in time for my midday yoga class, so it wasn't a total bust. Watched a French film (Jeune Femme) in the afternoon, which was excellent but sad. I gave up mid-episode on the current BBC4 Saturday night overseas noir (Norwegian this time - Twin), and watched the silly but fun film Bill instead. I'm fine, basically.

Some small and shitty things keep happening to upset my momentum though. My annual travel insurance expires in a couple of weeks and there's just no reason to renew, is there? That's a beautifully nurtured no-claims discount gone. And today? Today I should have been moving to Paris for a work secondment. Oh well. I still have wine, so it's practically the same.

18 Do you enjoy gardening? Have you started your garden already? What are you planting this year?
No I do not, and no I have not. Like at least a third of people who live in London, I have no outside space whatsoever, other than somewhere to put the bins. I've never much cared about this, but what I wouldn't give for some kind of balcony rn. Ugh.

19 What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read this week?
I still can't read much, apart from scrolling, which I'm trying to cut down. I've started another potboiler thriller, which isn't as good as the last one but shows I can still follow a plot at least. I've read a couple of chapters of Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts, which is a rather lovely thing if you're missing archives, although it's wildly elite access being described, and very far from the kind of records I enjoy.

I've also opened and read a bit of Greg Jenner's new book, Dead Famous. It was published after lockdown began, and he struck a deal with an indy bookseller who was going bust, to act as a clearing house for signed copies. I bought one because it's such a nice thing to do for both author and seller. (I am spending a lot of money in lockdown, trying to support a range of businesses I really want to be alive when we get out. It's probably futile, but it makes me feel better.) And the book will be fun - a history of celebrity, which looks at the most amazing mix of people who became famous in history. So far, I've heard of two, and not heard of half a dozen. So it's stuffed with good stories. About where my brain is at the moment.

20 Are you watching anything good on television right now?
21 What crafts do you enjoy doing?
22 What’s one thing you do to conserve resources or “go green”?
23 Again, fair folk, the day has come to speak
As if the Bard had writ the words for you.
But if blank verse sits not upon thy lips,
Then grace us with your thoughts about his plays.
Happy Talk Like Shakespeare Day! If speaking in blank verse all day is impractical for you, just tell us which of Shakespeare’s plays is your favorite and why.
24 Do you have what you consider to be a good habit, but is one that likely annoys other people?
25 Did your mother work outside the home when you were a child? What was her job?
26 What activity makes you lose track of time?
27 What’s one thing that happened today that went exactly as you planned or wanted it to?
28 What’s the one song that could be the theme song your life? (Post a link?)
29 How have your goals changed as you've gotten older?
30 What’s a nice thing you did for somebody today
