I've had one of those intensive working days when you really don't get much time to think or breathe. I seem to be having a lot of those lately. Also still feeling a bit bleurghy for no good reason. I'm out of ficlet ideas, temporarily, no doubt. A couple of nice recs for my stuff today have linked to things I'm glad to have written, and reminded me that churning relentlessly doesn't always produce good stuff.
So, I join half the flist in this LJ meme, just to say hi.
-How did you come to start your LJ?
I followed a link, probably from
herself_nyc, or
eliade or
missmurchison, because they had websites and then they promised there was more fic over here. I was ill at the time, and needed distraction. And fic.
-How did you find your first friends?
I didn't, really. You have *no idea* how long I lurked without daring to comment. Without really having a flist. I had a list of bookmarks, and I'd check each of them in turn. I really don't know why/how long this went on. I do know when at least one of my laptops died a sudden death, I lost some bookmarks and probably lost some people I was following.
I do remember commenting on
janedavitt's journal one May Day, when she was getting homesick for the UK, and getting a comment back. Also posting about 7/7 bombings when they happened. But my journal was almost empty.
I got a *lot* more friends-to-talk-to out of
fantas_magoria and my Bloody Awful Poetry day at
seasonal_spuffy. But that came several years after I first began the journal. And WriterCon UK, obvs.
-Are those first friends still on your FL?
Yep. I'm the faithful type. Besides, I had great taste. *g* Anna obviously doesn't post these days, but there's something about removing a name from the flist that I dislike.
-How long have you been on LJ?
Eight years, near as dammit. And I lurked before that.
-Do you have more friends or communities on your FL?
Friends. But I did have to check.
-Do you do a lot of friends cuts?
Nope, almost none. Friends may fall in and out of fandoms, but interesting people are interesting.
-What do you like in an LJ friend?
Chatty! I like to interact. But also tolerant, because I don't always get back to all comments on general posts.
-What do you dislike in an LJ friend?
I don't really have friends like this, but I do recoil from seeing in others' journals a whole lot of officious 'no you're wrong' comments on any given post. Civilised discussion is more than welcome.
-What would make you un-friend someone immediately?
Not many things, apart from being a truly horrible person with awful views that depress me. I do just occasionally unfriend someone who posts masses and masses, uncut, with loads of typos, but that's just about keeping a flist that doesn't make my eyes bleed.
-Have you been caught up in a lot of LJ drama?
Nope. Praise be.
-Do real-life friends and family members know you have a journal on LJ?
The boyf does, but he's hilariously un social media savvy and probably doesn't remember which platform. Various friends and family know I have a blog and/or write fanfic. I don't link them here. That said, some LJ friends are most definitely now RL friends, and there's no hiding from you. *G*
-Do you also have Facebook and if so, what do you prefer - LJ or FB?
I do, but I decided to stop posting updates some months ago. I keep it to keep in touch with some friends and especially family members I can't keep up with otherwise (my late cousin's girlfriend and their kid, for example).
-What about Twitter?
Yesssss. I loves my twitter, and I post far too much on it. But my twitter @ is my real name and used for work in between comments on commuting and telly, so I don't share it on here unless I know you pretty well.
-Do you blog on any other sites?
Only for my work, as part of a big team of staff giving 'authentic' insights into working there.
-How often do you check in on LJ?
Multiple times daily. More now I can look on my phone, and I have my flist open in tabs all evening if I'm home.
-What do you rarely or never post about?
The boyf, who sneaks into posts but is never the subject of them (I think one heavily filtered post way back apart). Work, though that's a bit less definitive these days.
-Why don't you post about that?
Because he's a whole separate person and entitled to stay off social media as he chooses? We're not married nor never will be neither; I don't have any right to speak for him.
Work is a practical thing - I work in a specialist area, and am very readily identifiable. My real name is unique [no one else in the world/history/evah], and the google trail to this LJ would be too short. I'm not exactly ashamed of writing vampire porn, but I'd rather leave it unlocked for anyone to read and not fret about getting the rep of being 'the one that writes porn' in my profession. (Seriously - a colleague used to run the F word, a feminist website, and she's still known as 'the one that wrote that blog post where she talked about her period', some 9 years on. And it was a fairly brief aside in a serious article. Small worlds = narrow worlds.)
-Have you ever thought about deleting your journal?
No.
-Have you ever changed your username?
Yes - after the first WriterconUK when I realised no one could pronounce it, I added the underscores. Revolutionary!
-Why did you choose your current username?
As it says in my profile, they are Italian biscuits full of good childhood memories. It means 'ugly but good' btw, which is why I tend to shorten it to BMB rather than brutti.
-If you're looking for new friends, how do you find them?
...memes? Lately? Also comments to comms - BtVS fandom is now small enough it's easy to make friends. SPN I just follow comms and writers I like. And, lately, commenters and lovely artists have come my way, which is great.
-Are you taking new people on to your Friends List just now?
Yes, and always. What's a journal for if not to talk to people?
-Finally, tell us the reasons why you keep an online journal.
See above? And because of the fic. I've written about 300+ stories in under 5 years, and the thought of putting all that on a website of my own makes me cringe. Besides, it's better here because of feedback. See above? *g*
