More of that fanfic meme... not sure it's a very enlightening part

I feel so naked without Green Card to post... Also, very silent. Which I may be for the next couple of days, as I'm away from home on work business. Fingers crossed for some decent wifi, but I'll be moving around quite a bit so nothing is guaranteed.

11 - Genre - do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

Not genre as such. I've played around with various types of fic, of course. Character pieces and other short styles are my usual, but I'll try pretty much anything. I used to say I don't do dark, but in fact for short pieces I can and do. I've even written bloody awful poetry, than which there is no greater fandom challenge (apart from *good* poetry, but you need quinara for that). What I am conscious of is that I've got a very conversational, light style, heavy on the character voice. It's an effort to write anything else, and very often I don't try. Bad author.

12 - Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

I've made references, for sure, like a Sherlock Holmes setting for a Spike and Angelus fic or giving Giles a Midsummer Night's Dream, but I don't think I've done anything as complex as this. All human AU Angel/Wes hardboiled gumshoe is probably the closest thing I've written, but that was years ago and I haven't checked to see if it makes me cringe now...

13 - Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

I love to play with canon and that used to be my mainstay. Now that I have two verses of my own I can see the charm of playing around with your own fanon, but I still like to get back to canon as much as possible. I do see more plotholes in canon now that I'm trying to work with it… If something's pure fanon I don't feel any need to respect it, but that doesn't mean I won't rip it off if it's useful. I suspect that comes from being relatively late to Buffy fandom; I want to write something new, not adapt what came before, and it's not easy.

PS Thanks for the LJ gift, rebcake!
