Happy Birthday to Me!

*I wrote this a few days ago and now I'm posting it*

So I just got back from my mother’s surprise party. It wasn’t bad at all to be perfectly honest. It was nice to see everyone gathered even if I hadn’t seen most of the people in a very very long time. Everyone’s gotten fat.

Chasity, my sister, was being a bit of a bitch just like I knew she would in terms of getting everything set up just the way that she wanted it. She did a good job with everything, it’s just that the way that she addresses people was very callous (“callous” is the word of the week apparently, I’ve been using it a lot...just like I’ve been working on making “a lot” two words in my vocabulary and in my writing. Thanks, Grace).

When my mother came in and we all yelled “surprise” she stood there for about a minute with her mouth open, eyes wide and hands raised in exclamation. We had to usher her in a bit.
The food was good and the party was drama-free. Thankfully a blanket of calm smothered the craziness that was preparation. I actually had fun.

I talked to my niece at the table and that was enjoyable. I really do believe that being a server has helped me with my people skills. I’m sure most of you guys remember when I was shy, quiet guy and to an extent I’m still him. But now I find myself being more sociable, more open with people. I don’t have that same feeling of anxiety when there are a lot of people around that I used to have. I know how to conduct myself better and that makes me feel better. Plus, all of my friends helped me out of my shell.

So Tami and I are planning on going to Denver in the beginning of August. We would have gone at the beginning of next month, but my work schedule would be hard to work around.
I’m really looking forward to it. Not just the fact that I get to do some of my favorite things like flying, visiting new places, seeing a city, and hanging with good friends, I also get to see the city that I might be moving to at the end of the year.

My friend Nick and I plan on going to Boston in the fall and I’m looking forward to that too.
So now I think that I need to start building up a few clips to show to potential employers. I’m going to write an article each month and send them off to magazines and hope that they’ll publish them . My idea for my first article is to explore the new age/new thought churches that have sprung up in the area. I know about Living Spirit and there’s one in Florence in the plaza with Southern Market and then there’s the Universalist Unitarian church. I just want to ask the owners/ministers what made them want to open their church in the Bible Belt area, how the locals react to having a new age-y church and what the attendants like about the church as opposed to other churches.

Now if I can just find a magazine to submit it to.

Peace. Out.
