This is fascinating. I haven’t worked out yet what I think of it… How much energy is spent in creating the oil, for starters? At least for the people who make oil out of it, the value of the oil has to be more than what they paid for the plastic and the energy to create the oil. If it’s enough for them, then yeah.
Of course net energy will be lost, but perhaps at a slower overall rate by using the plastic a second time. It also seems to take care of the pesky disposal problem we’ve discovered in the last few decades where plastic doesn’t actually decompose, it just gets smaller and smaller (
Oceans Awash With Microscopic Plastic, Scientists Say) assuming that most or all plastic can be so converted.
