tainted love

I am not normally all that much into music, for obvious reasons. It doesn’t usually resonate with me that strongly, although I certainly enjoy it. Most of the time I can simply take it or leave it. However, this one did hit me. I’m more familiar with Soft Cell’s cover of Tainted Love, which means that for once, I can listen to this remake and ( Read more... )

How did you come upon this ghastly cover? (I don't like the original either, FWIW.)

You know, I'm not actually sure where I stumbled across this. But it's the first time (for me) that I've seen a song remade that I knew elsewhere and I never expected the difference to be so jarring. Anyway, I think it was from a chance comment in one of the blogs I read that had me searching for alternate covers to songs I actually know ( ... )

Godamnit, I have now had Tainted Love, a song I completely dislike, stuck in my head for two days! Thanks for that!

On a related note, though, do you get songs stuck in your head? I don't mean rhymes you make up yourself or read somewhere. I mean honest-to-goodness songs/tunes.

Earworms? Extremely rarely. I can think of maybe once or twice, and really, I can usually stop them.

Hmm, Not at all fond of this cover. And have just gotten into a long discussion w/ my partner about it. He feels it's absolutely "F--king Brilliant!" I'm still trying to sort out my feelings towards this other than euw!

There are so many many, esoteric references through out the video and you can see where Coil's influences are from. Check their Wiki page: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Coil_%28band%29 And that imagery is kind of part of what is making me recoil, and I am familiar with where it comes from.

I am extremely curious as to why you had such a visceral reaction to this, and how much of it is related to the imagery rather than the music in this case.

Interesting -- good question on the imagery. It could well be that a good part of my reaction is to the imagery, which would make a lot of sense for me. I had no previous knowledge of anything to do with Coil till I read thru the Wiki entry, so I don't where any of the imagery comes from.

It just strikes a tone of desolation & loss, both visually and the way the lyrics are rendered that hit me with this version.

Other renditions (Soft Cell & the original Gloria Jones) just sound like someone getting out of a bad relationship but not having their hearts ripped out of them in the process.
