Why Frank, how shocking!

Frank Miller's recent fixation on retelling the same slightly creepy story again and again?

Still going strong, baby!

(Special bonus for Mary: If you read far enough down, quiche's heterosexuality is called into question.)

I'm fighting the urge to lecture lj at large for daring to be excited about 300. Does lj really care that the person who ( Read more... )

OH GOD. 300. OH GOD.

As a classicist, it makes me cry. Tears! Tears of sadness, down my face!

Someday I'll sit down and force myself to read through the whole thing so I can make a proper rant of it, but the art, the basic archeological inacuracies, rapes my brain and I must go and read many a volume of Age of Bronze to cleanse it.

If you ever sporked it, fandom, lj, and feminism would be indebted to you. And I would make you pie.

I'll make you something out of my Classical cookbook to accompany BB's promised pie. But yes, AoB is a lovely antidote to such fuckwittery.

I'll need to get a hold of a copy, then, and find all of my notes and readings on the subject. :)

But off the top of my head? Miller's take on "armor"? HA. WHAT ARMOR. The Spartan's don't need no stinkin' armor. They deflect the blows of their enemies with their penises, which sway gently in the breeze. And while Miller does get a few neat, minor historical details correct (i.e., the Spartans brushing out their hair), he forgets basic things like, oh, HOW A PHALANX WORKS.

And Xerxes! I won't even talk about Xerxes, as it makes me all frothy.

I'm ignoring 300 and hoping it goes away. But, if it doesn't, at least it's not likely to try to have female characters in it. I feel sad that I'm thinking of this as a good thing. Then again, I watched about 10 minutes of Sin City.

Yes. In one sense, Miller's at his most progressive when writing an all-male subculture. OTOH, I've never read it, so I'm not sure who gets thrown into a volcano to make sure we know that the Spartans are manly men and in no way pillow-biters.

Yes. I don't generally enjoy Atwood, but I rather enjoy did this novel!

What I love about the trailer for 300 is that I can go through and pinpoint exactly the things that will offend me about the movie. It's like a game! Where's Bigotry instead of Where's Waldo.
