You too can rec fiction!

Actually, lets start off with a unrelated link, because it's funny. It certainly does not insist that the Disperser is the God of Genesis. Okay, on to the meat of this entry.

Reccing well is hard work. I bashed my head against the monitor several times while trying to rec for crack_van. I was trying to emulate reccers I admire, like makesmewannadie and thefourthvine, and I didn't succeed in that even a little bit. But reccing in a half-assed sort of way is now easier than ever thanks to the technology of del.icio.us. Anyone can get an account, and bookmark a fic's url with the tag "rec."

You may not be aware, but some people already are!

I have a rec feed at at betty_fic, LCSbanana recs at lcsbanana, and Zeeleepenguin recs at Zeelee. If you have a feed that contains recs, let me know!

Lists that are automatically generated at a certain URL (like LJ posts, for example) can be syndicated to an RSS feed. This makes it so that you don't have to check back all the time. New entries will be delivered when you visit your reader. This is especially convenient for lists that are updated too sporadically for you to remember them, but have interesting content on occasion. Essentially, it lets you make a friends page out of the internet.

If you want to read a syndicated feed in your browser, you have two fairly simple options: Bloglines, or Google Reader, for anyone with a gmail account (and if you'd like a Gmail account, let me know?)

Once you're a Bloglines or Google reader user, you want to add feeds. Here, it pays to be specific. Why subscribe to more than you want to? Enter the Url of the specific tag you want. For my rec feed, you could subscribe to del.icio.us/betty_fic, but do you really want all the random things I might tag? You can just as easily subscribe to del.icio.us/betty_fic/fic, or if you only want my DCU fic recs del.icio.us/betty_fic/fic+DCU/

To subscribe using Bloglines, once signed in, under the My Feeds tab on the left, click add, and enter the URL you would like to syndicate. If the url has an associated feed, it will present it to you to subscribe to.

To subscribe using Google Reader, enter the url you are interested in the "search for new content" box at the top of the page. Google Reader will find any associated feeds for you.

Feeds are a little bit of trouble to set up, but once you are subscribed to two or three, they become worth your while. A browser like Firefox or Opera that lets you know when a site has a feed makes setting up feeds that much easier.

If feeds are too confusing, I have syndicated my rec feed at milk_in_first.
