Drabble: Thou art gray

Dec 05, 2005 22:08

A result of Harriet_Spy's incredible The Lost are Like This (Dick/Slade) and a discussion with RubyNye about the direction Nightwing's book is going. This was betad by Maelithil and Petronelle. (Yes, more author's notes than actual story!)

Thou art gray

He finds Slade in Serbia, reeking of alcohol. He blends in, hunched over his drink with the same apathetic misery as the factory workers. Slade doesn't look up when Bruce's shadow looms. "Here about your boy?"

Rage clots his throat. Everything in the bar but Slade is as unreal as everything has been, since it happened. Bruce wonders, when he kills Slade, if there will be anything real left.

"You killed him," says Slade. "I gave the mercy-stroke."

When they're done, Bruce will never see from his left eye again, and Slade cannot appreciate the symmetry.
