For almost a year now, I've been in what I call "turtle mode". I've pulled my head inside (pulled inside my head), ignored everyone around me, and done nothing.
Previous to this, I'd be working 3 jobs at a time; I'd have half a dozen personal projects going; and I'd be renovating the house, doing the yard work, and still finding time to relax and talk with friends. This last year has seen none of that. I've mucked about with projects here and there, but they're all half-finished and going nowhere fast. I've gotten to the point that I come home, pour a glass of wine (which gets refilled until the bottle is gone), and watch old TV shows on the computer.
And it shows.
I'm fat.
A couple months ago, my mom asked if I wanted the old bathroom scales she was getting rid of. One is a 1950 antique that is absolutely gorgeous--even if it's not quite accurate. The other is a modern, digital gizmo. I used the digital to calibrate the antique, and put the antique in the bathroom.
Stepping on that scale and seeing it hit 200 was a shock--just the shock I needed to take a look at myself. I don't care about the number. At 5'-10", 200lb isn't horrible. But in context, it's rather striking. I was 125lbs in high school. I hit 145lbs in college. Doing construction 40 hours a week, I made it up to 165 (a decent weight for my frame). Now, I'm averaging 195+ and it's all soft and flabby.
The same goes for my mind.
So....
At midnight tonight, I'm rebooting my life.
I'm making a conscious effort to get my life back on track, and my body back into (reasonable) shape.
- Every morning before getting ready for work, I will do 15-20 minutes of stretching exercises.
- Every other day I will do an hour of aggressive exercise (exercising every day can be counter-productive, especially for beginners)
- Monday through Thursday will be alcohol-free (booze has a bazillion calories). I can buy & drink on Friday and Saturday. Sunday I can drink if there's anything left, but I can't buy any more.
- Lunch will be smaller portions and include better choices of foods (to be fair, I don't eat a whole lot of "bad" things. Most of my diet is pasta and fresh veggies, with meat thrown in now and again. I cook with sesame and olive oils, eat mostly chicken (organic) and shrimp for meats)
- I'll have a small, healthy snack at mid-morning for breakfast (bagel, carrot sticks, etc).
- Work supplies donuts on Fridays; I won't have one.
I was mentioning all of this to a friend, and she decided that she had her own set of changes she wanted to implement. She talked to another friend, and he has some, too. Not all of these are weight-related (nor even physical); they're just changes that people want to make. A change of attitude, mostly.
I know that I'll need some prodding here and there to make sure I stay on task. The others will, also. So, the occasional "how's it going with the reboot?" would be appreciated. :)
Hearing my two friends say that they have "reboots" of their own they want to accomplish made me think that, perhaps, even more people are feeling the same way. It's always easier to change when others are changing with you. So, I was wondering: Are there others among you who feel like getting on board? If so, I'll look into creating a group here. No rules, no formal plans, just a place for those of us who are working on making some changes can check up on each other and report progress.
Either way... Tomorrow begins "Blaze 3.0". It's an alpha release, lacking in features and sure to be exceedingly buggy... but it *is* an upgrade. Let's just hope it doesn't crash the system. :P
