We're in Prague! Finally!

Day 19

I think I should have a standard opening line for this journal... “today was another lond day on the bus.” Yes, we spend a lot of time on the bus, about half of the tour I’d imagine would be spent driving from onne country to another. I don’t mind it so much-I love watching the scenery and waiting for when we cross the borders or go through the toll booths (it’s very cool, all the toll booths we go through are done with RFID tags-thanks Netlink for that little piece of knowledge ;)).

There’s not much to write about when we’re on the bus-like I’ve said previously, it’s mainly used as time to catch up on sleep, listen to music or stand up comedy as we’ve been doing lately, and talk amongst ourselves. I’ve tried sleeping but seeing as I don’t sleep well in a bed I don’t know why I even bother on the bus. The bus rides are usually all the same-get on, sleep, have a pitstop, eat, talk, pitstop, eat, talk, sleep and boom, we’re there. In between all of that Ryan will get up and talk to us about the country we’re about to enter and give us any information we need and maps etc. He’s very knowledgeable, he can communicate in quite a few languages as well which is cool to hear.

We were lucky today-we crossed the border in Czech Republic quite early on so instead of making a stop at our usual roadside restaurant/service station, we were able to stop in a small town called Ceske Krumlov (I don’t even think that is spelt right, oops). We had 45 minutes to grab lunch so Amy, Nicole, Courtney and I raced to this little cafe where I had the best chicken salad I’ve had so far. It was very filling and it was so nice to have proper salad for once instead of just lettuce and tomato (double eww)... or even worse, lettuce, tomato and cottage cheese. Vomit material! Kayla joined us as well and they all got pasta which looked good and they said it was even better than the Italian pasta we got in Italy. We were running late so we made a mad dash back to the meeting point where we were safe, we weren’t the last people to get there. Csesky Krumlov is a really small, really quaint and old town where there is not much to see or do but there is a lot of beautiful architecture to look at. There was even snow, most of the Aussies on the tour got into a snow fight as soon as we jumped off the bus.

We arrived in Prague early afternoon after a small delay in Ceske Krumlov-a couple of girls got lost, the poor things, so we had to wait for them. We were dropped off at the Kraslovsky castle in Hradcany straight away and Ryan took us through it. It’s amazing, so pretty . We were taken on a walking tour of Prague then-it’s very easy to walk around Prague, it’s not that big so you could walk around all day and  see everything within the main area. There is a tram that takes you up one of the big hills but we wouldn’t need to use it at all. After the castle, Ryan took us on a short walk to go see a famous statue at the Franz Kafta museum, which I had no clue was famous or not until I saw it. It was two robotic guys who were peeing into a small lake and they were writing famous lines of an author’s text in the water (I can’t remember the author’s name). Kinda gross but kinda cool at the same time.

We then walked to the Karlov Most bridge (Charles bridge) which has all these little markets and stalls along it. There is also a famous statue on the bridge with a plaque on it that you need to rub-one rub on the side with the dog and another rub on the side with a woman. Rubbing the plaque on both sides is meant to bring you good luck... I need all the luck I need, I haven’t had very good luck on this tour some days! Once we finished looking around the bridge, we walked over to Jan Hus, which has a magnificant cathedral and bell tower on it. The bell tower has this wicked astronomical clock on it, it’s so pretty-it tells the time, what star sign is currently in ruling and something else no one is able to figure out. I should probably Google it to see what it is otherwise it’ll drive me insane not knowing.

After the cathedral and the tower, we began walking back to our hotel. We pretty much walked from one end of the town to the other in 20 minutes, our hotel was actually in the town itself for once. Usually all the hotels we stay in are just outside of whatever city we are staying in. Once we arrived at the hotel we trudged our way up to our rooms (an Ibis hotel... no words to describe how cramped that was... our spoilt streak is now well and truly over!), changed if we could and went to have dinner in the restaurant. After dinner was a pub crawl, but being in Czech is very similiar to Germany and Switzerland-you can smoke inside everywhere. I’ve been having a few troubles with my asthma in these countries so I opted out of the crawl even though I really waned to do it. I knew I would send myself over the edge if I went into one more smoky pub. Instead, Marcarla, Anna, Clare, Sophia , Stu and I found a quiet non-smoking bar in town and had a drink there. We stayed for quite a while just chatting and having a good time.

We walked abit around Prague at night too. It’s just so beautiful, I’m really glad that this tour came here. It’s a good blend of modern and old architecture and you just want to take a picture of everything you see. So naturally I did! I could definitely spend more than two days here without question.

We all pretty much crashed into bed after that, everyone is really exhausted at the moment, especially now that the tour is winding down. I don’t want to miss a minute in Prague though. We can have a sleep in tomorrow as it’s a free day but I’m planning on getting up early and doing my own thing so I can see as much as I can... sleep is for when you’re dead!
