Nice, Nice, Nice

Day 9

Today was our second day in Nice, another free day to pretty much do whatever we want. Breakfast was less than pleasant. It consisted of stale bread and a croissant with only strawberry jam (yuck). I don’t know why I was surprised-I had flashbacks to when we were in France last time when Mum and Dad took us there. The tea ladies were not happy jan’s either, so we left pretty much straight away to go do a bit of sightseeing.

Unfortunately for us it rained the entire day. Not full on rain but it dribbled all day and didn’t let up except for about 10 minutes as we were walking along the beach. I should remind you, my crappy umbrella from Lucerne did not hold up well. I was soaked by lunchtime and even my socks were soaked all the way through. Thank god my backpack is waterproof though. I’ve mostly been using that because I can lock it and some people have made me paranoid about being pickpocketed (thanks Mum :P).

As there is not really much to see in Nice unless you drive out further up the coast to Monaco or Cannes (which we could do but we would have been very rushed), we decided to climb the steps to this really big wall that overlooks most of Nice. We got some pretty amazing views from up there and got some great pictures again. We also got to see the airport from there too-we watched quite a few planes take off and land... the runway extends over the water, it’s very cool.

Once  we went back down the stairs we did a quick walk down the beach and took more photos of the coast and the water. There is no sand on the beaches on the Riveria, it’s all rocks. I remember that from the last time we were in Europe but it still spun me out to see no sand. Give me Perth beaches any day though. We then walked through these little markets area which mainly sold fresh food and little nick-nacks. Saw some really cutesy things but have yet to buy anything. I don’t think much more is going to fit into the backpack right now. We walked around the markets for quite a while and browsed in the little souvenir stores as Amy was hunting for magnets. She’s collecting them for every city we visit. I was trying to do that with postcards but I’ve forgotten more times than remembered (funny that). After wandering the markets we went to a little bistro where we got a really cheap feed-most of us got pizza and it was really good. It was nice to get out of the rain for a bit although I think we dripped all over the restaurant.

We made our way back to the hotel to dry off and sit down for a bit. I changed my clothes and made a phonecall to Mum, and then the girls and I sat in the big hotel dining room chatting for a bit as we warmed up. It was pretty cold in Nice today-much colder than the last time I visited! After attempting to read French magazines and drying up, we decided to venture out into the rain again. This time we walked to the main shopping square and went to the big shopping centre to check it out and see how different it was. It was huge. I managed to buy myself a nice black coat to wear when we go someplace nice because I can’t keep wearing the blue one around all the time (thanks Tara, you’re a lifesaver!).  Nicole bought herself some cute shoes and Claire also bought herself a black coat as well. There were some really cute stores in there, I think I could have easily spent my money in there if I wasn’t being careful about what I am spending. It’s hard-I want to spend all my money but I know I need to be sensible so I have enough for Ireland in case things don’t work out straight away.

We pretty much spent teh rest of the afternoon walking around and ducking into shops before making our way back to the hotel. Dinner wasn’t at the hotel this time (thank god, I was a little afraid of what they might serve us considering they put SO much effort  into breakfast). We all jumped on the bus and drove a little way out to a tiny restaurant in the back streets of Nice. It was cute but dinner was blah. They served turkey snitzel which I vetoed as I hate turkey, and there was a vegetable and potato dish and something else I don’t even want to think about. Dinner was the freakin’ pink and vanilla icecream again! What the?! We’re all making bets as to whether we’re going to get this icrecream every night.

Once dinner was over we trekked it back to the hotel where we mostly packed up our things for an early start the next morning. Looking forward to another morning on th bus...fun.
