Lockdown and Austen
At the beginning of lockdown I did a post on Facebook saying I'd ordered a set of old BBC adaptations of Jane Austen films, and when they'd arrived LO THEY WERE VHS. What should I do? Return them and try to find DVD copies? Wait for lockdown to end and have them converted? Obviously, I went with, buy a DVD player.
This little project span rather out of control, as my mad, random little projects sometimes do. I started out looking at the Wikipedia entry for every Austen book (including Lady Susan and Sanditon) to find what TV and movie adaptations were listed. Then I tried to find them all online -- and failed with a lot of them. (Full list under a cut at the bottom.)
In the midst of this process came the ordering of old BBC versions (one of them is actually ITV, and BBC clearly made a one-off purchase to fill out their boxed set).
Then I scoured BBC itself, and *that* led me to BBC radio versions. Finally I came up with this REALLY REALLY COMPLETE full list (which undoubtedly is not at all), the rules for which are basically:
- a book on tape (simply reading the book aloud) doesn't count
- a dramatisation does, whether audio or visual
- I'll watch modern adaptations too
- Including/especially any foreign language ones I can find
So, this is the list I came up with. The ones in bold, I either already own or know how to access in the way listed.
