Mass Idiocy?

The cloud came over late on yesterday afternoon.  Last night the rain started. Aujour d'hui il pleut! Ah well, the sunshine was nice while it lasted and I got the washing dried.  Anyway, it is somewhat chilly this morning.  I really must make an effort to finish another cardigan - either Grace, the cotton one, or the colourwork yoked one, it seems I shall soon be needing it.

I was reading some more about the Oregon mass shooting, and about how come Americans are so wedded to their guns when life itself would be so much safer and easier if they gave them up.  It put me in mind of the current brouhaha over Jeremy Corbyn and his (personally held) views on Trident.

Not sure quite what I think about nuclear weapons.  I do know that I am very anti the use of them.  In which case why keep them?  They're only standing around, requiring guarding and maintaining, eventually replacement, all of which costs vast amounts of money - and for something which (we hope) we'll never use.  Money which could be far better spent on health, education, welfare (including Old Age pensions) etc.  Just think, if we didn't have Trident, or if Trident was subject to the same stringent budget cuts as everything else, how much more we could afford to do.  Hmmm.

You see, if you have a culture of gun ownership, as in the US, people are going to get shot, whether en masse or singly.  The daft thing is that most people in Switzerland also own guns (cos they're part of the extended Swiss army).  How many times have you heard of some disaffected Swiss going on the rampage and shooting up a mall, or school or college?  What's with Americans?  Alternatively, what are they missing?  Apart from a lot of common sense anyway!

Ah well, at least they're talking about it and here for all there seems to be an unwillingness, if not an impossibllity of even thinking of a world without everyone armed to their perfectly aligned teeth.  Trouble is, in the 'new, new, new, News' culture we have I can't see America being allowed to talk, let alone think, about anything for very long.  The ad breaks come so close together for one thing.  w00t! for the BBC and a video (what's the current term?) recorder so I can record programmes on other channels and skip the add breaks.

Meanwhile George Osbourne is trying to persuade those disaffected with the current trend the Labour party is taking that the Conservative party is the place for them.  Which is not quite as daft as it might initially seem.  After all, (Tony Blair's) New Labour was virtually to the Right of the then Conservative party.  Now it's to the left of the current one.  All those people who ditched voting for the Lib Dems in favour of voting for someone else, thus letting in the Conservative party untrammelled, may well be kicking themselves now.  Particularly as parts of their lives are progressively squeezed or cut and the juggernat car of Austerity rolls on, it's wheels lubricated with the blood of the homeless (including babies).

I hope that the disaffected otherwise-Labour supporters will see through all George's waffle.  He isn't interested in them.  The current Conservative party isn't interested in anyone, unless they are either Seriously Rich or Very, Very Rich - look at their policies.

And Finally - Dr Who on Saturday was ok.  What's the betting he's in the big white box?  I'm still more in favour of the Original Series though.  The plots were better, better character development too.

Y'all have a good day now!

weather, guns, politics, dr who
