So yesterday was the Autumnal Equinox, for those of us living north of the Equator. Officially the first day of Autumn and all that. From now on in it's ever shorter and darker evenings until winter Solstice. For those in the Antipodes it was the first day of Spring. And so the year turns.
Yesterday, apparently, was also the joint birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins*. Note this in your diaries, Dear Readers, and next year you too can host a Hobbit-style birthday party.
Ideas here. "Swing those furry Hobbit feet" - to misquote Mike Batts, but that's another literary area. Go on, Dear Reader, guess where?
Also yesterday H approached me somewhat diffidently in the evening. "Can you mend these?" He enquired and handed over a pair of the wool/cotton 'wearing for work' socks I'd knitted him a couple of months back. Mend what? Holes, in the heels, as usual with his socks. What is it the
Yarn Harlot does in these circumstances? Oh yes, says, "Darn!" loudly, then drops the holed socks in the trash (YH is Canadian) and goes and knits another pair. I was very calm, and didn't go into orbit, not at all. Just felt mildly fed up, then grateful they'd lasted as long as they had!
Pardon? Yes, of course I reinforced the heels as I knitted them, Dear Reader. Trouble is, the place H's heels wear through is right at the top of the heel area, almost in the leg of the sock. Thus not where I reinforced. Note to self: Reinforce the next socks in this place!!! Ah well, I have another pair on the needles, one knitted up to the ankle, the other somewhere up the foot. I can see what I'll be knitting for the beginning of this week at least.
I can see what I'll also be doing soon. Wonder if YouTube has clips on "How to Darn Socks"? I did Sciences at school, not Needlework, hence didn't learn how to darn. Not, I think, that those who did do Needlework learned how to darn socks. As I remember from them it was an entirely (woven) fabric-based course. Mending holes in clothes and various kinds of tear, yes, darning, no. Mum didn't teach me how to darn either. It wasn't a done thing back then - the socks were all shop bought and too fine to darn effectively, also to cheap. Ah well.
Now then, search strategy. D'you think "darning socks" might be a good place to start?
Y'all have a good day now!
*Would you believe the SpellCheck knows 'Bilbo' but not 'Frodo Baggins'!
