Get Your Hair Cut!
Our lil' boy phoned us Wednesday evening*. OK, so at over 6' & 24 years old he's not so 'little' any more. It was nice of him anyhow. So what did he have to tell? He'd had his hair cut - cos he'd been able to sit on it . He's also busily training to join one of the Brecon groups of the Mountain Rescue teams. They'd had a look at his flowing locks - fair ringlets even - 'Elf & Safety had kicked in & they'd done a Sergeant Major on him. Ok, not a short back & sides perhaps, but definitely only down to his shoulderblades. Otherwise when they were out on the mountainside, in WEATHER (which is usually the kind of time they get called out) & using ropes he could well become another casualty. Think about it, Dear Reader.
Anyhow, along he'd trotted to the local barber & said he'd wanted it cut, to about mid-back length. The barber, probably mishearing his accent, promptly chopped it off at shoulder-length - which some of us know is an unfortunate length. Long enough to get into your face, blow everywhere in the wind, but too short to tie back in a ponytail. I have yet to see a man wearing bunches so the alternative is to do a kind of 'Elf' hairstyle thingy. S says the last time his hair was this short he wore a hat to keep it in order. Then he was a student. Now he's out in the big, bad World of Work, where such things are inappropriate - not to mentioned hot in a centrally heated office. Ah well, he has another few days to get something sorted. Maybe a hairband - you know, like the rugby players wear. Pardon? Ok, a sweat band then! & when he's out on the mountain he could always wear one of those funny upside down topless efforts with earflaps skiers sometimes sport!
*Look, he may be taller than me, & 24, but I'm still his mother, he's still my son, & I could tell worse stories - if I could remember them.
Those of you who know our lad maybe will be wondering why he had problems with the barber. Doesn't he know the Welsh for 'mid-back length'? Couldn't he find an English speaking barber in Cardiff? Oh probably, but this week he's in Canada, the West Coast of Canada even, & it would appear that it isn't just the USA & England which are "two countries separated by the same language"! Long way to go for a haircut, H & I thought!
& those now wondering about our son phoning from Canada, West Coast Canada even, just to talk about a haircut - he's got Skype! I did consider suggesting he also phone his Grandad to tell him. E is a great advocate of short (& I mean short) hair for men.
There now, nuff of the shaggy son story. Y'all have a good day now!
