If it Ain't Broke . . .

If all else fails, either quit or try something different.  I am sick of the “Update” box flashing on & off every time the autosave cuts in.  I shall write this in Word then transfer it.  Now I’m old-fashioned enough to believe that ‘improvements’ should be done to make something actually BETTER, not just to change things cos they’ve been that way for all of, oooh, two weeks, whether they were working well or not.  Dear LJ, if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it.  &, as in the case of the flashing autosave, if it is, then get ut the insecticide!

So drug-resistant strains of TB are on the increase.  Surprise, surprise!   Some 'experts' are blaming this on patients failing to take their full course of anti-TB medication.  Which isn't surprising as most cases of TB currently occur among the poorer people of poorer countries.  They can't afford a whole course of medication - that's 8 months' worth!  Having said which, the incidence of TB in the UK rose by 10% in 2005.

However the main reason why TB, in any form, is on the increase it that we don't care.  After all, the world got together in WHO and erradicated smallpox.

Professor Peter Davies, of the organtion TB Alert, said TB - and in particular multidrug resistant strains of the disease - was a bigger problem than people had expected it to be.

He said around US$500m had been committed globally to the search for new drugs - but this was only around half the amount a commercial pharmaceutical company spent on developing one product.

"We are simply not getting the funding for new drugs and vaccines that is required," he said.

"New drugs are being discovered, but there is no money to put them through randomised clinical trials.

"We have known this is a problem for 20 years, but we have not been serious about controlling TB."

Isn’t hind-sight wonderful? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6182025.stm Apparently Saddam Hussein was never really viewed as a real potential threat to the West - by some top diplomats at least.  For that matter, whatever you may have thought of his oppressive style of government (& it was oppressive), at least Iraq under him, at least Iraq under him was stable.  Which is more than it is now.  In fact it even begins to look as if Blair, if not Bush, realises that pulling troops out now would just lead to full-scale civil war, which would be bad for the West, not to mention even worse than the present mess for the Iraqis.

Did you know that the world’s tallest man has arms which are 1.06m long.  Heck, it’s bad enough knitting jumper sleeves to fit me!  Meanwhile the Chinese freshwater dolphins from whose stomachs he pulled plastic earlier this week are exceedingly grateful!  You didn’t notice that story?  Then try here -http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/world/asia-pacific/6178659.stm

And further trivia - there are apparently 200 million blogs which are no longer updated.  Hmmm, when did you last update yours?  Or delete the unused one(s) for that matter?  Hey, maybe they've all had their update pages redone by the Kids at LJ!

Have a deft definition: a child making a sarcastic remark - Infantisnide!

Meanwhile those who enjoy puns, or a good groan, or who would like to try out their (second language) English, might like to view this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/magazinemonitor/punorama/.  Then again . . .

Which is probably more than enough for one day.  After all, some of us have Christmas to organise.  *Peers at screen, is that a typo or muck?*  Some of us also have monitor screens to clean!

WHY is this so slooooow this morning?  Y'all have a good day now!

puns, tb, trivia, iraq
