What Price Community?
Well, the Government, governed itself by financial considerations, is proposing closing loads of Post Offices. Bad Idea, people! Very often
the rural Post Office cum General Store is the backbone of a village community. For that matter, how many of us have spent hours queuing (we're British, we queue) in some city Post Office? And why, when there are up to six windows available, do they only have three (max four) of them personned? It's like lunchtime at the Bank - but that's another blogripe, & they only have three or four cashiers at the eight or ten windows available!
Now having lived in this city for twenty-five years plus I know the location of a few smaller Post Offices, which is great when one wants to post something quickly without having to queue up with what looks like half the resl of the local population. I also know of at least three which have vanished, even the biggish one in our local Mall has relocated and downsized several times in that period.
OK, so the Government does have to consider how to best divide a limited pot of money - but what are the criteria? Cos it looks like "How Many Pounds will this Cost/Save us Now?" seems to be the main, if not only, one. That's unless they're dealing with something the PM has decided he wants anyhow, like renewing Trident. Mind you, I can't see running down the NHS & closing rural POs providing the £25million that's rumoured to need! I think it's about time people learned/relearned/realised that really important things cannot be reduced to monetary value, & came up with some other form of value asessment system. Or at least factored in the value of otherwise 'intangible' & hitherto unconsidered things. Mind you, that would require them to make value-based judgements, & the government has been working so long to promote a 'value free' society that that would be a Bad Thing in their view.
Thinx: How can you have a 'value-free' society?
BOTHER! I didn't mind the LJ Update tweak yesterday, it wasn't too much different. & I've been wondering what people have been moaning about it. Are they wusses or something?
Today it keeps flashing at me. First the "Autosaved draft at time" goes. Then the whole blog update box goes. Every second or so. AND it keeps scrolling back to the top of the update box, unless I 'm typing at the time. Typos today are due to me not being able to see the words half the time!!! Hey, the dial-up has just cut off, it's stopped flashing at me. w00t! Only problem now is the autosave isn't - autosaving, that is.
I give up, this new update scenario scuks! OK, so it's mildly annoying. Extremely annoying after a couple of minutes. I'm off down the pub, for a coffee. Y'all have a good day now!
