So, after a lot of consideration, I have decided that a mostly free education at an awesome school with great people that doesn't prevent me from getting my dream job trumps an education that will put me nearly $100k in debt (if I can even get enough loans for it) from a brand new program in a somewhat shady school that will give me the job of my dreams. Thus I have decided to accept Texas Tech University's generous offer of paying most of my tuition and then giving me a giant stipend after their recruiting weekend. The people are awesome, campus is beautiful, and Lubbock isn't the shithole that I was lead to believe it was, it is actually a pretty cool place, even if it is absolutely flat and has sideways traffic lights. Seriously, after living in Denver and Boulder my whole life, it is going to take me forever to get my bearings without having that nice wall of mountains proclaiming "This is West!" at all times. And the traffic lights, those are just mean. I am colorblind, and people don't like giving people like me driver's licenses, so I couldn't exactly ask which one was green when they are sideways during Driver's Ed. Luckily, one of my fellow new students pointed out that it is like reading. Red is either on top or on the left, most languages write top to bottom or left to right.
The program is a little weird, and I am going to have to take a lot of literature classes and teach Freshman Comp for two years, and probably won't be able to write a thesis, but I think it will be interesting. I already signed the lease for a two bedroom apartment not too far from campus and am starting to figure out everything that I will need before I move out there, and trying to figure out how to buy it.
I have decided to get an ereader for my lit classes, as I enjoy reading on electronic devices more than regular books, and the ebooks are cheaper than regular ones as well. I have a Kindle app on both my netbook and phone, but I can't take notes or highlight on my phone and I would like to be able to not have to rely on my netbook all the time, as the battery is starting to wear out. I have done some research and determined that the new ipad is probably my best bet. Now, with the exception of my ipod I hate all things apple, so this was not an easy choice, but the ipad reading app will let me read pdf's, which most of my readings that are not in books will be, as well as all of my research (even if I don't write a thesis, I want to publish at least one paper), and there is a kindle app for ipad so all of the books that I already have will be able to be read there as well. Plus, I can then use it for presentations and teaching. I don't want to use my netbook because I have personal and potentially embarrassing stuff on here, so that will work out great. Do any of you have an ipad or know of a better option?
I am really excited about starting school again. I have only been out for a few months, but I already really miss it.
On the writing front, well things are going slowly, but do not fear, I am making progress and will finish what I have started.
