you were summer [and then you left]

You're fifteen when your family goes up to the lake for the summer. Usually you bum around around the neighbourhood or visit family up north. Mom wants to tan with a book and Dad wants to fish in the fresh air of the mornings, and you think that so long as you can find a boat to entertain yourself with, you'll be okay with this arrangement.

You find yourself a tall, dark-haired boy with the devil's smile, instead.

***
Adam works at the booth down by the beach, and you met him when you and Katy went to grab some ice cream, your treat.

Katy is small and petite, with long blonde hair and blue eyes to match her angel smile. Her family owns the cabin next to the one you are renting, and it was nice to have someone your age to hang out with from the start. She's quirky and fun, and the prettiest girl on the resort.

Funny how the boy behind the counter steals your breath when you've got what might be the perfect girl right beside you. It's not something to freak out about, not really, just something to consider. Adam's smile is disarming, and he asks what you kids what.

Two chocolate ice creams are sold, and you ask him if he's from around here, his accent having given him away. He's from California, actually, but comes out east to Arkansas for the summers to work; his grandparents own the lake resort. Katy asks when Adam's shift is over, and the three of you make plans to take Katy's boat out on the water later that evening.

***
It sort of becomes a routine after that. You stop by Katy's cabin after breakfast, maybe help her choose her outfit. It's pretty easy to find things to do, especially when there's a fifteen minute walk to a park and golfing resort when the water gets boring. You find more excuses to go to the booth than is probably necessary, but Katy likes Adam, too, and there's something rewarding about distracting him from his customers.

Adam works until five most days, and he sort of blows off his other friends to help your dad cook hamburgers over the fire for supper and wash the dishes afterwards with your mom. And then there's being eaten alive by mosquitoes while exploring trails and roasting marshmallows late at night. There's stealing some of Katy's parents' alcohol after they've gone to bed and trying some of Adam's weed and laughter around the campfire. There's Adam and Katy singing cheesey country songs while you pluck away at your old guitar. Soon enough, there's also sleepovers and crashing on Adam's bed, waking up the next morning tangled up and wiping each other's drool off your necks and stomachs, giggling over apologies.

And then Katy goes home, hugging the both of you before getting in her car and leaving with her parents. Waking up in Adam's bed isn't so carefree and whatever anymore, it's watching him sleep and counting freckles. It's watching his chest rise and fall and pressing your face into his neck, pretending to go back to sleep. It's kissing and touching and almost being caught by his little brother, who wants to play ninjas and pirates, please guys?

***
The last three weeks of the summer are a blur of boating, ice cream and Adam. He's three years older, and even though he doesn't have his boating license, he convinces your parents that it's an excellent idea for the two of you to go fishing each morning. The cool mornings are nice; peace and calm give way to countless uninterrupted hours of quiet conversation and watching Adam's serene smile as he stares out across the lake.

You don't catch many fish. It's not really about that, anyway.

***
It doesn't happen quickly. It's not a clean cut on the last day, or anything easy (harder) like that.

It's a slow build, a realization that starts a week before he will leave for California. What were once easy, thoughtless touches become determined, as if to remember every detail, every curve and inch of skin. He admits, the night before he leaves, that he's got a boyfriend back home. And you're not surprised, can't even bring yourself to feel bad about it. Adam sure doesn't. Doesn't even pretend that he's sorry for cheating. He's kind of ugly like that.

And yet he is still beautiful when he breaks you slowly, his devil's smile making one last appearance before fading to something softer, something reflective. There is no apology on his face; he'd be a stranger if there was. There is, however, regret.

You look away when he says it, unwilling to remember the way his lips form the word. You don't say anything; you give him a long and deep kiss to remember you by. It's not a goodbye, just a promise.

You spend the next few months thinking of next summer, maybe allowing yourself to hope, just a little.
