Thanks to Woman's Hour, I've just learnt that Queen Charlotte1 had a sulking room at Kew Palace! I bet she needed it, an' all.

This strikes me as a marvellous idea. I can't decide whether it's then same thing as a growlery,2 or if there's a subtle difference in the type of ill humour w/ which one retires to either such room, or if it a sulking ( Read more... )

HA! I've just watched that episode of Bleak House recently. I liked the term Growlery!

I loved the term when I first came across it, but had assumed it was a Dickensian coinage for that novel. Seems like the word has a life beyond Bleak House! Yay!

Note to self: obtain Bleak House DVDage pronto, and learn how to use yr bloody DVD re-writer already!!

"Boudoir is a French word whose original meaning was "pouting room." In earlier times, if a young lady was sulky, she was sent to her boudoir where she could pout in private." I need one!!!

WOW!!

Delayed reaction (been a busy few days), but this piece of information pleased me tremendously, and I've gone about relating it to as many people as would listen :-) I've since found out that the French for 'to sulk' is the verb 'bouder', and have been pouting and sulking away in my own boudoir ever since :-)

I have a sulking room and a growlery! But I had to combine them and put my bed and clothes and everything in there too...
