My temp job at USC starts tomorrow. Today I took the light rail at rush hour and walked to the Starbucks where I'm supposed to meet my project manager at 8 sharp. Even though I missed the train I intended to take (by 2 minutes, need to leave the apartment earlier) and the train after it (it was on the wrong side of the platform & I didn't look at the destination on its flippy sign because IT WAS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE PLATFORM), I got to Starbucks at 7:59. I will leave the apartment five minutes earlier tomorrow and hopefully catch an earlier train so I don't have to walk quite so fast once I disembark. But I now have a one month light rail pass and hope to have the spoons to make use of it for more than just commuting.
Mom was here this past weekend, since I haven't seen her since Christmas and needed a hug. She came in late Friday. Her plane was early, which meant I was in the bathroom when she came out of the terminal. I felt really bad about that.
We had no clue what to do Saturday, so we got brunch and drove to Seal Beach because I vaguely recalled it was a nice place to walk around. We got bored after about an hour. I figured "fuck it, we're already almost halfway there" and drove down PCH to Laguna Beach, which was much more fun to walk around. We stopped to take pictures of the fourplex my parents always rented in for their annual vacations. I think I stayed there once when I was about 18 months old. I got a sun burn because, having left the apartment without a plan, I hadn't put on sunscreen. I am still vaguely pink, but only the back of my neck still hurts.
Sunday we took the light rail to Expo Park and gawped at Endeavour. Science centers are generally for little kids, and the California Science Center is no exception (except for the SPACE SHUTTLE ZOMG I CAN'T EVEN), so we bailed and went to the Natural History Museum (unlike the Science Center, they charge admission). I suspect this is much more fun when the mammal halls aren't taken up by the annual BUGZ ARE TEH AWESUM fair. [blech] Their exterior signage sucks and is inadequate. If, when you are there, they have a line outside, you wait there to be let into the lobby to stand in line for tickets. Even if the signs only talk about the bug fair and do not mention admission at all. Anyway, the dinosaurs and mineral halls are cool. I did not know amethyst was a type of quartz!
We just screwed around at South Coast Plaza yesterday, marveling at the 1% and their stuff. Then I put Mom on a plane and was sad.
I should go start laundry at some point. 5:15 comes waaaaay too early in the morning.
