You know what I suddenly noticed about Lord of the Rings (and the Prydain Chronicles, for that matter)? A lack of dogs. Are you seriously telling me Rangers range without something sniffy and bitey? Or Rohirrim horses don't have any help closer to the ground? Those Roman-substitute Gondorians have no canis pugnax? How is Farmer Maggot the only person in the whole world with canine co-workers?
I think Taran's personality would have been greatly improved if he'd been raised with a dog or two. He takes himself entirely too seriously. Contrast with Wart in Sword and the Stone and how Ector's hounds bowl him over at least once onscreen.
