CHAPTER TWO cont...
After class, Spencer slowly wandered the halls, in a daze. She saw Ashley walking toward her and sighed. She felt bad for keeping something like this from her. But she was afraid. Part of her was afraid of how Ashley would react. Spencer knew that her brunette girlfriend wasn’t known for keeping a cool head about things. But mostly, Spencer was frightened of what something like this would do to them. Things had only just begun with Ashley; she wasn’t ready to lose her.
“Hey girlfriend.” Ashley smiled her cheeky grin at Spencer.
“Hey yourself.”
“So, there is this party thing tonight-”
“Ashley, it’s a school night.”
“So?”
“So…you’ve met my mother right?”
“Right. So, I was thinking we could show our faces for like 10 minutes before heading to a private room.”
Spencer raised her eyebrows. “I’d love that.”
“Great.” Ashley leaned in a kissed Spencer’s cheek.
“Who is throwing this party anyway?”
“It’s something that Aiden -” Ashley’s voice faded out. Spencer could see that her lips were still moving, but there was no sound. Aiden? How could Ashley ask her to go to his house? How could she expect Spencer to still be his friend after what he did to her? But she didn’t know. Spencer had managed to go 24 hours without telling her. 24 HOURS? That was it? It felt like it was a lot longer. But it would be a lot longer. Forever was definitely longer than 24 hours and that’s how long she needed to keep this to herself.
~~~
That afternoon, Spencer stood in front of her mirror and looked at herself. She wasn’t sure was she would find. She had done this a million times and was yet to find a single mark that was proof that it wasn’t something she’d made up. Maybe it was better that there were no bruises, or cuts or scratches. This way it would be easier to get over, right?
She snapped her attention from the mirror as her bedroom door flung open.
“Oh my god, Spencer, I’m sorry.” Chelsea pulled the door closed. The blonde reached over and grabbed her dressing gown. Wrapping it around her, she let Chelsea know it was ok to come in. “I’m really sorry. I should’ve knocked.”
“It’s ok.”
“I just thought you were out with Ashley. At that party.”
“I’m just trying to find something to wear. She’s going to be here soon.” The two girls stood in an awkward silence for a moment. “So, what’s up?”
“Not much. I was just looking for Clay.”
“In my room?”
“Ok, I was looking for you.”
“Yeah?”
“I was just wondering if everything was ok.”
“With me? Of course it is.” Spencer turned to her closet and grabbed her doors, steadying herself. “Why wouldn’t it be?”
“I don’t know. It’s just, that’s not the first time I’ve seen you admiring yourself in the mirror like that.”
“I wasn’t admiring myself.” Spencer snapped. How could Chelsea know something was wrong? They weren’t that close. Ashley and Spencer were closer, in every aspect of the word. And Ashley had believed her when she’d said nothing was wrong. So how could Chelsea possibly see through that? Spencer slowly faced Chelsea. “I’m sorry for snapping.”
“Did something happen, Spencer? With Ashely?”
“No.” Spencer shook her head, slowly. “Not with Ashley.”
“But with someone else?” She slowly lowered her eyes to the ground. “Spencer, you can tell me.” When she looked up, her eyes were filled with tears. Chelsea walked toward her. “What is it?”
“You can’t tell anyone.”
“Ok.”
“Especially not Ashley. If she finds out…” Spencer let her voice trail off. She wasn’t sure why she was going to tell Chelsea. She just needed to tell someone.
“You have my word.”
“It’s about Aiden.”
“Did he make a move on you? Even though he knows you’re with Ashley.”
“No, not exactly.”
“Well, what is? That’s the only thing I can think of that you would want to keep from Ashley. She’d kick his ass.”
“He raped me.” Spencer whispered.
“What?” Spencer looked into Chelsea’s eyes. She knew that the other girl had heard her.
“He…he raped me, Chelsea.”
“Ok, I’m going to kick his ass. Ashley will kill him.”
“I know.”
“How could you keep this from her?”
“How could I tell her?”
“She’s your girlfriend, but before that she’s your friend, Spencer.”
“I know that. I do…I just…I can’t tell her. And you can’t either. If she finds out…” The tears were flowing as fast as her words were pouring from her mouth.
“It’s ok, Spencer. I won’t tell Ashley.” Chelsea wrapped her arms around her. “But you really should.”
