Dave's Review: Open Water

Aug 23, 2005 15:17

The premise is simple... a couple goes diving, and the boat accidentally leaves them stranded in the middle of the ocean for 24 hours--and they fight off exhaustion, sharks, weather and other things in a fight to survive...

Personally, I think it did a pretty good job doing just what it said it would... essentially, its a boyfriend/girlfriend couple who love scuba diving, and are taking time out of their busy schedule to do just that at a coastline resort.

Warning... there is a completely unnecessary naked chick around 10 minutes into it... when you see the guy and girl both brushing their teeth, the very next scene is nakedness. Skip to the next chapter on your dvd player.

Anyhoo, they catch the charter boat with 18 other people, plus the boats crew, and through an unfortunate mistake, the ship's captain miscounts. Susan and Daniel come up from the water with no boat in sight.

It documents the next 20 hours worth, as they float, starve and suddenly... sharks arise out of the water. Just when you think "this is a little boring", someone gets bit, and there is blood everywhere, attracting Jaws and his whole family.

To say anymore would be to say the ending of the movie, but it is based on a true story that happened in Australia. The real life couple were actually left in the ocean, and the boat company didn't know until TWO DAYS later... the couple was never seen again, though some of their gear washed up on a shore a few hundred miles away about a month later. I WON'T say, however, if Open Water ends like the real life story, or if it has a Hollywood ending... I will say that the ending surprised me a little. I wasn't expecting it to end quite like it did.

All in all, it wasn't too bad... so I'll say...
Dave's Rating: $$1/2... without the unneeded boob shot, it would be 3 dollar signs...
