Saturday my parents and brother came down to visit. My brother and father made some general repairs on the apartment while my mom and I got them lunch (and my cake..). We returned to the apartment only to find that my dad needed some different screws to put a drawer together, so we left again. After finding the screws, we all ended up taking a long walk by the water. I also got to show them the how where the fairies live. It's so magical!
After we returned, we ordered dinner from Goodfella's and watched some TV. Afterwards, we had cake and presents. My brother got me "Pan's Labirynth", and the books "He's Just Not That Into You" and "It's Called a Break-up because it's Broken". Awesome. I also got a GPS navigator. It's my family's/my dad's new favorite thing in the world, and rightly so. It reads off satalites and tells you where to find things. So cool. Ryan and I had borrowed my mom's when we went to NH. It was quite helpful.
On Sunday, Ryan came over and surprised me with the best peace offering/birthday present EVER - KITTENS!!! They are adorable! One is gray with very white feet - Socks - and the other is a grayish tortiseshell - Minnie (short for Minerva McGonnagal). They are precious.
Monday was my actual birthday and Kristen and Ryan took me to Uno's where we met up with Saro. We also ran into Kayla and her sister there, which was fun! We then returned to Kristen and Saro's apartment where we watched "Down With Love", appropriately.
On Tuesday, Kristen and I went shopping for my birthday outfit. Unfortuneately, there were mad crowds of people everywhere due to July 4th. We didn't end up finding anything. And to add to that frustration, I lost my cell phone as soon as we were about to go our seperate ways. Fortunately, I found it in the one store we had just walked in and out of. Strange, I say.
Then I returned home to find Socks not feeling well and limping very badly on his right hind leg. I called Ryan telling him I thought he had an upper respiratory infection. He gave me some numbers to call. Eventually, we found an emergency vet in Brooklyn. I called and they calmed me down and told me that they were always open 24/7 if I wanted to bring Socks in. I decided if he wasn't better by morning, I would bring him in then.
However, his condition only worsened. He became extremely lethargic and wouldn't stop screaming. I could feel his body heating up. I called the ER Vets back and they told me that since he was only a baby, I needed to bring him in ASAP. So, I call Ryan and tell him that Socks needs to go in tonight. He suggested that he meet me there and I thought that would be nice since I didn't know where I was going, I was panicking, and I didn't want to be alone holding a dying kitten somewhere in the middle of Brooklyn.
I take off in my car. The kitten shits all over himself. I get to the hospital, call Ryan, and find that he's not meeting me at all. He's out buying a shower curtain. Wow... I was speechless... I mean, what do you say to that? I was only partially convinced that the only thing he cared about in the world was himself, but now I am thoroughly convinced. I mean, I was PANICKING. Socks was SO sick. And he had even said he was going to meet me! But I guess shower curtains are more important, right? Wow.
I check Socks in at the hospital. It's now about 10pm. I sat there holding this shit covered kitten in my lap, while he screamed and his fever rose until 3am. Yes, 3am. That's when they finally saw us. It was so stupid. They KNEW it was an emergency - told me that if it was a kitten, it was bad news, and then they make me sit there with him for 5 hours while he was in agony the entire time. Meanwhile, I'm sitting in the waiting room crying with Socks, continuing to panic, for 5 entire hours.
Anyways, they finally bring Socks and I into a back room. They take his temperature and immediately panic happens. His temp was 105. They bring another doctor in and after she checks him out, she says that he has to stay in the hospital at least overnight. She almost gave me the option of bringing him home with me, but then they couldn't get his fever down so he needed to stay on IVs. Ended up he had some crazy upper respiratory infection and they caught it just before it became pneumonia and he died. Oh and he sprained his leg somehow. Awesome.
Through all of this, I had Ryan on the phone because the cats are under his name and we were trying make sure he would be billed so that way he could yell at the ASPCA. That took up another hour at least because he COULDN'T JUST BE THERE to sign the papers himself. UGH.
I ended up getting home at 5:30am.
I kept calling the hospital to check on Socks. They kept telling me that they were extremely busy due to the holiday and to call back later.
I called Ryan and he told me that he'd rather see the kitten dead then go through all this trouble. Awesome.
Finally got in touch with the doctor and she told me that she would rather keep Socks longer, but his fever was lowering and she felt that the stress of the hospital would only harvest the virus in his body. So I could pick him up around 6pm. I tell Ryan this and NOW he wants to meet me there. (Good thing, too, because he ended up having to sign some papers.) He's agreed to paying half of the bill, too, which is nice considering.
So yeah, went to pick up Socks. He's on antiboitics and painkillers. Ryan pampered him - now that he was better, of course. We got back and ordered some Chinese food. I cried more because I was so relieved that the kitten was going to be okay.
Happy 4th to me...
Thursday, Holly and Emma came down from MA to help me get my life together, which was AMAZING. We cleaned and started making the salads for the feast the next day. It was quite the job. I wouldn't have been able to do it without them. <3
Friday was the feast! It was a great turnout and there was much merriment! We had lots of fun eating all of the food I/Emma/Holly had prepared, opening presents, and eating cake with Butters on it designed by Kristen! Good times.
Saturday, I slept a lot. Then that night was Karaoke Bash for everyone! I had it at Planet Rose which ended up being the most amazing place. I kept getting free drinks as the birthday girl and sang lots of songs! We made lots of friends on the way home too.
Sunday, Trisha, Megan, and I sat around and watched Anne of Green Gables all day. So good.
Ryan came over for dinner last night and it was great having his company. :)
Tonight I'm going to see Grey Gardens! So excited!
AND HARRY POTTER WEEK BEGINS FRIDAY NIGHT!!! AAAAH!!!!
