Travelling abroad with medications?

Hey folks! I'll be travelling outside the US for the first time in my life this January, to spend four weeks in the UK (yay!). I'm flying via France on the way there and via the Netherlands on the way home. I'll be bringing my prescription injectable testosterone (T) and needles - the T in my carry-on due to pressure and temperature concerns in the baggage hold of the plane, and the needles in my checked bags.

As my T vial is 5mL, it's well below the 100mL limit for liquids being carried on board a plane, and I have no other liquids I need to bring in my carry-on. I'll put the vial in its required plastic bag and all that, and I'll have the packaging it came in - with prescription sticker - in my carry-on. The restrictions for liquids seem to be the same for the various airlines and airports I'll be using. (For the interested: I'm flying Air France to Paris and then to Manchester, and then taking KLM to Amsterdam and Northwest back home to Boston.)

I'll be seeing my doctor next week and have left her a message asking for a letter confirming that my T is prescription and that it needs to be carried on board the plane even though it won't be used in-flight. My needles are not prescription, but I've asked her to also say in the letter that they're needed for my medication and she has authorised their use.

So my question, primarily for Americans - did you bring a doctor's note for any medications and/or needles? Did anyone actually ask to see it? Was there any trouble at all? I'm not really expecting trouble - they wouldn't like it if I brought needles on board, but as I'm checking those, I assume it'll be fine - but having never travelled abroad before, I'm a bit terrified of being sent home or having my T or needles confiscated for some reason.

Thanks in advance!
